1133, XP Pro & Silencing a Modem Posted by FZbar, Sat Dec-15-01 06:07 AM
Despite operating in Administrator mode, silencing the modem at dialup is not working. The apply button is greyed out, which could be related, but nevertheless I get the same dial sounds out of the speaker no matter what the sound is set to. Any suggestions besides getting earmuffs?

If there is an area for extra settings under your modem properties (as in Win 98), put this-
L0M0 (those are both zeros)
in there and that should do it. | |

Another option might be to check the sound card mixer settings and reduce the volume control for the Line Out option. My Creative modem is like that.

Actually there really is a command line in MODEM SETUP to enter additional lines. I had to enter M0 in there with XP

It's funny sometimes how the same thing can be perceived so differently. If my modem were suddenly silenced, I'd be posting to find out how to get the sound back. I just wouldn't want to be without all the reassuring "music" it makes as it connects. And if you listen long enough, I understand it can be used as a diagnostic tool to troubleshoot connection problems. LOL

Jim. No offense. I'd prefer Bach.

So do I. But I also like old time rock 'n roll. And modem sounds. LOL

Actually, there is a way to play tunes with your modem if you enter numbers that are associated with the different tones, can be quite complex harmonics, some major and minor chords too. Did you ever hear F7? There's a loop command that will play it over and over and never send to dial. I do this all the time, hours of dial tones tooting away....cats don't like it though..... :+ :+ :+

Next thing someone is going to tell me is that they've used a modem as a synthesizer to produce a record (CD?) album!!
I'd buy almost anything at this hour.
