120776, RE: OT-What's your favorite smell? Posted by SteveYandl, Thu Aug-15-02 06:49 AM
old dude,
The scent of roses is largely due to some carotenoid degradation products known as rose ketones (largely citronellol and beta damascenone). Chemists looking for synthetic variations came up with the terpenoid ether represented by the diagram I label as one of my favorites. It is a rose type scent with a more significant impact on our scent detectors than the natural rose chemicals and makes the top notes in Diors "Poison" and a host of other great perfumes.
The second molecule (one of my least favorites) is 3-methyl indole (skatole) which one might experience in an outhouse.

>Castor oil burning through a WWI rotary aircraft engine. >Really.
That would be high on my list too !! (or through a V8 engine) !!
But top would be....wood smoke ! (No I'm not an arsonist !! Here in 'sunny' Manchester UK everything is so wet it would never burn anyway !!)
or frying onions !! Yum !!
|
120788, RE: OT-What's your favorite smell? Posted by golouis, Fri Aug-09-02 01:14 PM
Yeah! I lived 18 years in Manchester and never saw or smelled wood smoke there except when an old house caught fire due to a short circuit and that was pretty horrific.

>>Yeah! I lived 18 years in Manchester > >and where do you live now golouis ?? > First lived in Middleton then moved to Salford near the docks (which were still active then). Then started migrating: London, Brighton, and then across the Channel to warmer climes where summers are dry and sunny and winters mild (most of the time).

Something most of you never smelled, but the other old farts will remember.
Walking into a real neighborhood bakery as a child, and smelling the aroma of the baking, in the days when they used real butter, and no chemicals in our food.

Im 59 years old now. In the early 50's every summer my parents would put me on the train by myself in Los Angeles and I would go spend the summer on my Uncles farm in Oklahoma. The absolute highlight of the train trip was going to the dining car in the morning and smelling the pancakes, butter, and syrup. Just typing this response has my mouth watering.

My grandad's old smokehouse. I can still taste the sausage, bacon and ham that my grandma would put on the table for breakfast along with home made butter, fresh biscuits and pancakes. Home made jams and jellies set out on a big old heavy oak table next to the wood stove and lit with a kerosine lamp (no electricity). Next best would be woodsmoke on a cool fall evening sitting out in the yard listening to whipporwills, tree frogs and coon hounds baying in the surrounding hills and the occasional lonesome sound of the whistle on a steam locomotive approaching a steep grade not far from the house.

The post was labeled OT to inform you that ir had nothing to do with computers, so why did you read it if you feel that way?
Personally I spend about eight hours a day on this forum. I answer many computer questions that I have answered 50 times before to help people I don't know, and will never meet. A little humor or an off topic discussion is a bit of relief waiting for the next serious question...Lighten up Bill!

My girlfriend's hair, and her skin. I also like the smell of alfalfa in bloom, and the smell of freshly cut hay fields as I'm riding my motorcycle down the Bitterroot valley.
Sorry folks, just now catching up, I was away on a business trip for a week. I have lost track of a lot on here while I was gone. Good to be home now. :-)

Worked on the wheatbelt here for a few years on a chaff cutter. On a hot summers day in the paddocks you would occasionally get a wift of rain falling on the barren paddocks miles away. That was the sign of a thunderstorm rolling in. That smell was awesome for a few reasons. One it just plain smelt great, two it meant it was time to pack up and three one of my other favourite smells, beer was just around the corner. :7
Apart from that I would go for an aroused lady :7 , burning rubber and the scent of food on the barbie.
