81 Newbee,
Heh, I thought this would be a post about algebra.
We sure do need some new members in UD/PC911. You can read about that here or click on my Sig below.

This falls into the same category as spam mail...Don't do this again else I, for one, won't open anything with your name on it. The others that do UD are straight forward about it.
I applaud all of you that are involved with this and I ask you to be honest with your posts......

Sorry about that Old Dude.It just frustrated the hell out of me to see so many people using this great site and seeing so few signing up for the UD program.I suspected that many of them just never clicked on on Dubbers postings because they didn't know how important the subject was.I figured I might get them to at least check it out.If it gets just a few more to sign up I am not sorry that I posted it.As for your not opening my posts there isn't a lot you could learn from a novice like me,and I hope you will continue to help me when you can.I didn't intend to piss anyone off and I do hope it gets a few people to realize how important UD is.SINCERELY, :+
PS:I just passed 3000 and hope to add many more.

I agree with Old Dude 100%. Bait and Switch. Fool me once...shame on you....fool me twice, shame on me! Besides, just because a PC911 Forum subscriber is not a member of the UD team doesn't necessarily mean they are not "crunching!"

And I repeat yet again when it's marked OT skip over it or stop complaining. UD is a part of this forum and it appears some had best get used to it.
I'm sensing a definite lack of tolerance for a bit of change here from some whom I would think are mature enough to know better. Things just don't remain the same as time goes by and much as I've wanted them to at times I too have had to learn to adapt.
This forum has a fair number of members now and no one can possibly expect everyone to share the same interests and life experiences which may motivate them. There are often topics posted that I find contentious but if I don't have an interest in them I ignore them and let those who do enjoy them have at it and do their thing.
I simply feel that where UD is concerned those who don't have an interest in it should extend those of us that do the same courtesy. We try hard to police the threads ourselves yet once in a while something you don't like may slip by but that doesn't mean it's open season for attack.
There are plenty of non UD related posts that push the boundaries of patience for some of us as well so it is a two way street.
The operative word here is tolerance. It must be given in order to be received.
That's my thoughts on the issue plain and simple.
Regards.........

Spezi,
I disagree and have already edited the title to reflect it.
If the UD campaign chooses to use these type of tactics, you WILL gain a member of staff as an active enemy. I doubt you want that.

Disagree with what statement pray tell? There were several made.

I disagree that titling it OT was sufficient, and I feel the basic title was dishonest. I also am tired of the ongoing membership drive using any and all methods.
It has already been discussed that UD posts are welcome as long as they are clearly marked as such. This thread was not.
Old Dude had and has a good point, and you're busy chastizing him, when you should be chastizing the member of your team who posted this. Maybe you believe in Machivellian methods. Don't bring them here.
Alex is the PC911 team leader as has been mentioned many times. Maybe it is time that the team looked to its team leader for example.

Al, it seems to me that you are coming across just a little heavy handed here. The poster did what he did with the best of intentions. One person objected basically, but Old Dude is alright, he just got ticked at being fooled.
Change the header if you must but to threaten the entire UD team with dire consequences seems a little in excess. These folk have only good intentions and are working extremely hard to get things accomplished. Personally I think your actions should have been directed at Backward Bob in another post with his inflammatory statements. Not the first time he has raised the ire of other subscribers here if my memory serves me correctly.
Not too often I disagree with your line of thought and I am sorry you have not been posting as regular lately as was the case in the past. But this time I feel you are not quite right. Just an opinion.
Derek.

"The road to hell is paved with good intentions".
People are responsible for their actions, not their intentions. Heavy handed? So far, I'm being very mild.

That's sad, sorry you feel that way.

I concur with Owbist and I'll also add that making veiled threats is in my opinion not becoming of a moderator.
I stand by my initial assessment of this thread whether you agree or not.
This was a simple case of a well intentioned individual attempting to do good for which he got chastised and try as we might it is hard to catch every UD related post as I'm sure you should be well aware of by now.
We members make an attempt to comply with forum UD policy (If you can call vague suggestions policy) but that policy is indeed gray and it would seem subject to interpretation by either side based on the mood of the day.
Maybe the answer is a firm set of guidelines but even if that were the case how are innocent mistakes by newbies dealt with then? Will they get jumped on too for the slightest faux pas?
I find it odd that there appears to be no end to the tolerance exhibited where other subject matter and behavior is concerned yet lately anyone involved with UD seems to be a target and is considered fair game.
I'm well aware that Alex is the leader and to the best of my knowledge he is privy to what goes on. I am also very aware that Alex has stated on multiple occasions that this place was also about having fun. Do you recall that part?
In response to your first post Al I have no desire to make enemies but in the same breath I will not back down when I see an injustice either.

Spezi,
Threats? I warn. I don't threaten.
As for "unbecoming a moderator", I really don't give a darn what you think about it. You deciding that you are responsible for the 911 UD team isn't exactly what I would call "becoming".
I don't happen to think that tolerance means ignoring dishonesty. Guess you do. You've made your enemy. Enjoy.

Old Dude this post was clearly marked "OT" which to me basically means it can be about anything as so many have been in the past.
It's quite easy really if you don't like OT posts don't click on them but for goodness sake don't get annoyed because it was less interesting than you'd hoped. 81Newbee is relatively new here and meant no harm whatsoever. Your curiosity got the better of you plain and simple but your expectations weren't met. It's happened to me many times too. ;)

I'm kinda like you, old dude. Got exicited when I saw the X-Rated.
Oh well, we should forgive dubber, et al. I just can't be a hard ass all the time, and besides it is for a good cause. My mom and dad both died from cancer, and when I get my new computer, I will join the fight.

I think I'll sign up tonight. I'll put together two systems deticated to UD. You know, I've got all these parts lying around. Both of them will be amd duron 850 mhz with probably 128 ram, maybe 256. I'll get to work on those tommorow. I can't wait to start helping - my aunt just died of cancer... so thats my motivation. Like I said, I'll sign up tonight. Anyway, gotta go get some computer parts! Later!

Maxf: Way to go! Glad to have you aboard. We really need the help on this team.
I wish I had started with UD sooner. Til my Dad died due to this horrible scourge, I didn't know much about it and didn't care. That definitely galvinized me though.

Hello Spezi,Thanks for your words.I was wondering if I had really screwed up instead of helping the cause.Perhaps you remember when I was trying to sign up to UD the system was having some problems.I got signed up by another name but it wasn't getting UD to start. With the encouragement of McNalley and you I stuck with it and and it finally got me going.I truley hope Old Dude isn't as upset with me as his post indicated and if anyone else is upset by my post ,please get even with me by signing up to UD and cut me some slack just this once.I promise I won't do it again.I still can't believe we can't get to 300 with so many of us getting the benefit of the great PC911 site. Thanks again Spezi. The rest of you should sign up today. :+

So if a person was to post the topic as, say: OT - This is not X Rated... that would fufill the honesty AND pique interest ?

128220, RE: OT Is this topic X rated? Posted by sophie tucker, Sun Aug-25-02 04:10 AM
ok- so i opened this too!;) :7 }>
i went thru the same thinking, 81newbie- that if people just knew about UD and how easy it is, why wouldn't they join? it's a win/win situation. and i'm delighted that people have read your post and decided to take the plunge!
however, some people think there are too many UD posts. what constitutes too much is an entirely personal opinion. and, like OD, people find it easy enough to skip them when they are clearly marked UD. being somewhat new, i'm sure you were not aware of the situation and posted with the best of intentions, using humor and something that was guaranteed to be eye-catching!;-)
anyway- just wanted to let you know that i went thru the same processes.
don't lose your enthusiasm! i for one enjoy reading your posts! and i have noticed you helping others new to the cause, which puts you right up there in my opinion with everybody else on this forum that gives so freely of their knowledge!

128222, RE: OT - UD Posted by Shelly, Sun Aug-25-02 07:38 AM
I agree with Al 100%. The headline on this post was clearly deceptive, though the intentions were good, if misguided. I think UD should appear in any header of any UD thread, in addition to the OT prefix. I hope you will do this voluntarily in all future posts. I would think you would wish your threads to be clearly identified for your members. The UD effort is laudable and very familiar to anyone that frequents our site. Those that are interested will join you without resorting to trickery.

128223, RE: OT - UD Posted by Owbist, Sun Aug-25-02 07:46 AM
Thank you Shelly. A good, sensible response without the huge threat Al seemed to bring to bear on what is basically an excellent group of people trying to do good for the betterment of mankind.
Derek.
