Just got a note from a Friend, New Virus: sulfnbk.exe infects C drive..But didn't have it Thanks to AVG.....Also--affects Outlook Express But doesn't touch Mac's Just pc's Thanks..........

Hoax

I do believe that one is rather old. Also, the original 'virus' was actually a hoax. Go to http://www.symantec.com and check out their virus database to get the complete info on this. This is also a great site to check all 'hoaxes' via email from friends...to see whether they are 'real' or not. If email from friend is the type that reads : 'Fwd:Fwd:'...normally it is a 'chain-letter' type that circulates many times and scares users into thinking it is a REAL notification of a virus. Just go to the Symantec website listed above and read all...good to make as a 'favorites/bookmarks'.

What a coincidence. Beth's father just got a warning from his friend about this "virus." I was skeptical when told that you just have to open the e-mail (not any attachment) to be infected. When we looked at his e-mail and saw that filename, I recognized the hoax right away. Here are some links to check out on it:

I never cease to be amazed at the number of people willing to believe they will actually be warned of a virus by email (probably, the last way you'll ever know.

An obvious joke, author unknown. An email will say "this virus works on the honor system. Please forward this message to everyone you know, then delete all the files on your hard disk. Thank you for your cooperation."

Numerous variant jokes sprang up based on this simple bit of humor. One of best knock-offs calls it the "Amish virus."

Who recieves an e-mail telling them to delete all the files from their hard disk and then actually DOES it? (And who's the poor computer guy who had to fix their computer? "You did what? Why'd you delete all the files? BECAUSE AN E-MAIL TOLD YOU TO???!!!!" ;-))

Hmmm ....things have been kinda slow at work lately. Need some extra cash before Christmas. Maybe it's time to send out some " helpfull" e-mails }> As PT Barnum said ;-)

Actually, you do have that file. It's a Windows system file, and you MUST NOT delete it. I also recieved that hoax a few months ago. Thank goodness I didn't delete the file until I got some expert advice from PC911. :)

Exactly! But sumtimes, they can be more dangerous than the real thing. It's like causing a catastrophe without any genius at all. I could site a lot of examples, but this is by far the best one.

My brother-in-law dutifully deleted the file, and now thinks he's restored it but can't get internet pages to display. He's got WinME in a new Dell machine and uses AOL. He used System Restore and can get his E-mail and gets logged on to AOL, but the browser won't go pas t that point. Any ideas?

Forgot to mention one other detail: when the computer boots up, he gets an error message saying "support tuner has encountered a network error". I can't find anything on that.

sulfnbk.exe has nothing to do with the internet or displaying pages. It only deals with backing up long filenames. He obviously screwed something else up. People that beleive everything they receive in an e-mail are not generally equiped to modify their systems.

I got the notice from a worried friend! I first updated Norton then scanned for virus....non found. Then came straight to PC911 and got the whole story! Thanks to all!
