1604, Defragging problems.
Posted by jools45, Sun Dec-16-01 04:52 AM
I have Win98SE and a 3 gig C: with only 470 mb free space. Also another drive , 9 gigs.
Trouble is, I can't defrag my C:

What happens is this...
I keep getting a drives contents changed...restarting...message.

What I did to try to remedy this.....
Through System Tools, went to System Configuration and unchecked selective startup items Process autoexec.bat file, System.ini file, and Win.ini file, and restarted my PC in safe mode.

What happens then is this.....
Reading drive information reaches 10% complete, I get the changed drive contents restarting message.
After 11 hours of this the defragging of file system was at 23% complete.
Can anyone offer some suggestions as to what I could be doing wrong....or may be able to do right????

Here's hoping :7

Turn off or disable:
• screen saver
• virus checking (software or BIOS-level)
• power management settings

Did you disable virus protection, firewall, screen saver, all other programs running in the background? Only things running should be explorer and systray.
That's all I could suggest, perhaps others can help even further.

This is an excellent program for defragging on Windows98, 95 etc. It closes everything down, defrags, re-boots and puts back on what you had running. Works great. There are now 2 versions. One is shareware, I believe the lite version if freeware. Check it out.

You can defrag in Safe Mode, and many people prefer to do so because you can also defrag the Windows swap file that way.
