308089, XP Pro machine not acting as before.

I have a HomeBuilt using an Abit AN7 with Athlon XP 2500 & 1 gig PC3200 mem. OS is XP Pro I upgraded from XP Home. My system will not go to sleep as it used to and also will not shut down on it's own. Gives me the screen that I can now shut the system off instead of doing it automatically. How can I fix these problems without reinstalling XP? I have several programs with data that must be resetup each time I do a full install and would really prefer not to.
