407212, Sharing an external USB HDD over a LAN?
Posted by Pilgrim, Mon Apr-10-06 09:01 PM
Is there a way to share an external USB 2.0 HDD over a LAN? It would make things quite a bit easier to create True Image backups on the other PC if this could be done instead of unplugging it, carrying it downstairs, plugging it in, etc.

Absolutely! I did it, and I'm no whiz. It involved sharing the drive on the network, is all.

I have found that networking directly to an external USB HD over a LAN was quite a bit slower then accessing the networked computer directly.

So it may end up being quicker to copy (or save) the image to a networked computer & then copy (or move) that image to the attached USB HD on that computer.

Two steps, but it may end up being much quicker (& worth verifying that that is the case for you also - or not).

Just direct write, to or from the usb drive - got a couple of 200GB drives in USB/Fire-wire cases and I just move them about where ever I need them (hot swap) :-)
