565295, Latest MS update

Just downloaded KB4103721. After the download a restart was required, I did that. When the boot had completed, the screen went Black and a small rotating circle appeared. That stayed on the screen for 15 minutes. I finally gave up and forced a shut down.

Restarting, the boot sequence again completed and the Black screen again appeared. Another 15 minute wait and a shut down. Trying to figure out how I was going to change the boot sequence to the USB port, in frustration I installed a Win 10 iso USB stick. Another restart and it finally brought the complete boot and desktop to the screen. The USB stick had nothing to do with it starting to work. No idea why it took so long to install this update but just thought I'd post my experience so others may be aware of this "feature"

I did the Spring Creators update last week so this PC (Acer Aspire One) was as up to date as far as MS concerns.

It is a problem on some computers that hasn't been sorted out yet. https://www.windowslatest.com/2018/05/09/windows-10-kb4103721-bugs/

I. too, fell for Microsoft's trick.
My computer became dead as a brick.

Nothing I tried would repair it.
Just as I was about to despair, it

dawned on me, to not spoil my supper,
I'd better run AOMEI Backupper.

The image I used was a week old.
Now my computer's again good as gold.

The end. - at least until KB4103721 arrives again.

Of course, Microsoft in all their wisdom wiped out all daily
system restore points.

Jim.

Well it happened again today on my ACER Aspire ONE. I shut it down last night as normal. This morning after the boot logo, the small rotating circle appeared on a Black screen. Just for a start to T/S, I removed the hard drive and put it on my USB adapter. Connected to my tower and ran chkdsk /f. No problems! Re-installed and the same spinning circle appeared. A little web poking and found a solution.

If you turn on the laptop and after the boot sequence, you press the Volume Up and Down keys simultaneously three times within 2 seconds, the boot completes and the desktop screen appears as normal.

Thanks MS for this undocumented "feature".

That's really interesting.

Did you figure it out somehow? Or, did you find it by searching? If, so, please post the link. There's got to be more to the story than just an undocumented feature.

Sorry I don't remember the link but I do remember searching for "M/S Spring Updates crashing PC's".
There was another "TRICK" for tower PC's and it had todo with holding the Control, Shift, Windows and the 'B' key while turning ON. It takes some finger dexterity but it did not work on my laptop so I don't know how well it would work.

You might try searching for 'Volume Up and Down together' just for kicks.

Thanks. I think this is it: https://www.addictivetips.com/windows-tips/fix-a-frozen-display-windows-10/

Maybe I'll try updating my desktop again when I have a few hours to kill.

Well, at least you answered my earlier question about what backup to use  (even if a famous poet you may not make)
