Wow, you have described every reason in the world to get rid of XP or start manually transferring files for security reasons if you have important programs you have to keep. If it's just to keep the machine Lubuntu would run better on it and has a similar Windows type menu and certainly easier to network if you keep a Fat32 partition for file transfer to avoid permissions.
