Hello and Happy Holidays,
I "obtained" this Dell laptop. It is quite old having XP as the OS. The model number has worn off so I only have the Service Tag number 5NSLL51 as an indication of the model.

When I got it, it would not power ON, no POST or disc spin up. After taking it totally apart, the CMOS battery was dead. First I removed the battery and installed a set of wires to externally power the BIOS. That did not work to bring the PC to life. I invested $5 for a M1220 battery that had only 2.7 volts on arrival but I did install it. Again re-assembling since the battery is on the underside of the MB, still nothing. I did the discharge with the battery out and still nothing. The Power and Charge LED's are lit.
My goal was to get this up and load Linux just for an educational endeavor.

If it is beyond repair so be it.

Regards,
Dan Kahn

I'm not quite clear on exactly what you have done to try to fix it.

Did you replace the CMOS battery?

The M1220 battery is the main battery, correct? (12 Volts 2300 mAh. Type: Lead Acid) Have you let this battery charge up and checked the voltage again?

The service tag indicates that this is a Inspiron 5150. You can look up service tags at support.dell.com.

The battery I replaced is the 3 volt CMOS battery. I had to take the mother board completely out of the case to find this button battery. It is soldered to the MB.

I get the same "No Start" indication with the main battery in or out.

I have had the laptop charging with the main battery installed for 2 days with no change.

I would say it's a lost cause.

I agree sounds like a fried motherboard.
