565986, Phony popup?
Posted by bobbo, Thu May-09-19 09:24 PM
I've been getting popups from wishhub online indicating that I'm to receive a deposit into my PayPal account. I have visited their website, and it looks sort of legit, but I'm thinking that its a phishing popup. Anyone have more info?

Free money? It's got to be a scam! What browser do you have open when you get this popup?

Of course its a scam. The popup from wishhub stated that an amount of money would be deposited into my PayPal account. I contacted PayPal and sent screenshots of the popups. I believe it had something to do with a new "friend" on FaceBook. Since unfriending, the popups have ceased. Will report more. Attached is one of he popupsL

Here's another popup that just came up:

The fact that it was a popup indicates that its not real. Anything like that should have been sent by email or any official communication method.

I'm confused.

Check Firefox for any suspicious add-ons, click Tools menu then Add-Ons. Look at Extensions, Themes and Plugins.

Also click on the Tools menu, then Options. On the left side click Search and then check what is set for the Default Search Engine.

Run a scan with Malwarebytes.

Thanks, Martin. I'm not sure I would recognize suspicious add-ons or extensions.

That's exactly correct.
You cannot tell a malicious FF extension "by looking".

These days, I would not trust FF extensions - unless they're continuations of preexisting legacy versions of same.

And even with that, they still have to be suspect.

Any add-ons dealing with the following would be immediately suspect.

- maps
- shopping
- PDF (except Adobe)
- TV programs
- passwords (except LastPass or other well known apps like it)
- search encryption or protection
