566174, Win10 Screen Saver Slide Show error Posted by makaiguy, Wed Nov-06-19 04:25 PM
Hi, gang. I haven't been around in a while. I'm glad to see a bunch of familiar posters are still in there kickin'.
I use the Win10 screen saver slide show option. It starts and runs nicely, but after running for a while it stops with a displayed error:
"An error is preventing this Slide Show from playing."
As I play images stored in different seasonal directories, and it occurs no matter which directory's images I'm showing, I don't think it's likely that this is tied to specific problem image files.
Is there any log I can check to see the cause of the error, or something I can set up to track this?

Looks like that's a common error going back to W7. If you have irfanview, it has a slide show function you could try.

Oh, heck yeah, I've used Irfanview for a decade, maybe two. Don't know any way to invoke this as an automatic screen saver, though.

Something in Irfanview I've never explored, or even realized was there. Not as simple as pointing Win's native slide show at a directory filled with images, but if it runs without error, it is doable.
Thanks, Jim!

I typically leave the unit up and running 24/7. In my Win power settings, I changed the desktop hard drive setting never to shut down when the computer is turned on, thinking maybe that was the problem. The screen saver errored out a couple of times that day, so I figured that wasn't it.
But since that day, the screen saver slide show just keeps running like a champ. Go figure.
Maybe the hard disk setting didn't go into effect until the system was rebooted and an overnight Win update rebooted the system?

.. and of course by posting the above, I jinxed the whole thing. It's back to erroring out with no discernible pattern.
