Well mu old XP machine died when I turned it on for another reason. The HDD just click and click. I know I should not have done it but so what, I opened the drive up to see if the disc would spin, it does.

So I have another disc drive that I checked out on my WIN 10 machine and it is recognized. Installing into my XP I get one beep and it shuts down. Thinking it might be a PS problem I unplugged the other drives (CD, DVD 3.5) sam ting.

The initial reason was to have a backup for a friends XP that lost the BIOS I believe due to low battery. He installed a new battery and it would not boot. He says it just beeps at him. I do recall there is some codes associated with the number of beeps but it has been a long time since I did this kind of T/S.

I do have another PS but before I go changing things I thought I'd ask the experts.

Low battery may cause CMOS to lose user changed settings, but should at least revert to factory settings.

You can try replacing the power supply, it won't hurt anything at this point. But you really should try to move on and discontinue using Windows XP unless you are only using it offline. It's really not safe to use XP on the internet.

Recognized as what?
As a disk drive?

What was on the drive? Some OS, I'll assume?
Or are you saying 10 recognized it & your intent was to use that drive in the XP machine, installing a fresh copy of Windows onto it?

This happens when?
Just as soon as you boot the computer after connecting the drive?


What kind of drive are we talking, IDE, SATA?
If IDE, is it jumpered properly?
In any case, power & data cables connected properly?

found two different problems. First the disc drive went south, as I mentioned before. The second was a bad RAM stick from Crucial. Now this PC has been sitting unplugged for at least 6 months, why should this happen. I can imagine the disc failing because it has not been turned ON but failed RAM? The PC would not boot with this one stick installed. There were two of the same type installed and it will now boot with only one. I have not gotten any further investigating if it will install an OS. I think it is time to make it a boat anchor since it is a very old PC and the apps I used it for have been made only for XP.
It seems funny but a friend has called and stated his XP is also not able to boot. I have not gotten this PC but it will be interesting to see what failed on his.
