Have you ever wondered why, even though there are so many crows, why are there never any dead ones on the highways. I see them flying while I drive, but they never seem to get hit by cars like so many other birds and animals. Well you see, they have sentrys posted in the trees, and when the sentry sees a car coming, they call out the warning, "Car, Car".

Out riding my bicycle, I've seen a few that have been run over - mostly near other roadkill. They were probably hard of hearing and missed the alert. LOL

Bit of a sport for some I know in our wheatbelt. But nailing one on the road is hard to do. Cruel I know, and I am a big lover of all nature, but they are one of the cruelest creatures I have ever seen. They will remove the eyes of a new born lamb without hesitation. I assume our crows here in OZ are the same bird you are talking about.

"they call out the warning, "Car, Car"."

Is that with a Boston or Long Island accent? :+

I never thought of them as preditors to prey on livestock. :-(
Here in my part of Pennsylvania we have plenty of roadkill to feed the crow and turkey vulture. On a search to find out more on the crow I found this great bird site.

http://www.avianweb.com/birdspecies.htm

An interesting read in the CROW section is "let's shoot the driver" Here is a paragraph from that article:

"It only stands to reason that a species so finely in tune to their environment as the Corvus brachyrhnchos (American Crow) would have bio-rhythms to match the changing conditions in order to survive for the long haul."

When I see large numbers of birds flocking together it STILL reminds me of Alfred's movie. :'(

Something that still amazes my DH: a turkey vulture flew into the side of DH's truck a few years back, needless to say BUZ did not survive.

I hit one with a van a few years ago. I think the poor bird was deaf! :P

I saw a story on crows being tool users and tool makers. They had 2 crows, mail and female in a cage with straight and curved pieces of wire. The mail being larger took the curved wire and hooked some food. The female took a straight piece of wire, wedged it in a crack and bent it into a hook. Then it hooked the food. The female also bent a wire by standing on one end and pulling on the other.

Very smart critters.

That's nothing to crow about, Allyn! ;)

I really didn't want to hurt him. It was following another crow and hit the right side of the windshield.

Actually, crows are surprisingly resourceful and intelligent. And mostly observant and cautious.....mostly...

These are the world's most famous crows I would think!........I seen a house fly, I seen a dragon fly. I seen a clothes horse, rear up and buck, and they tell me that a man made a vegetable truck. But I never seen that, I only heard, but just to be sociable, I'll take your word. I seen a peanut stand, I seen a rubber band, I seen a polka dot railway tie.-----But I be-done-seen 'bout ehvry-thin, when I seen a elephant fly
