1172, $4.63-$10.00=????????
Posted by uffbros, Wed Oct-09-02 06:07 PM
I know this sounds stupid..but.... When I do this calculation on a calculator the answer comes up -$5.37. This can't be right as the last 2 have to still remain .63. Why does a calculator come up with this???
Answer has to be -$6.63..That is easily done in your head but calculator says different.

jeff, i also come up with 5.37, if it were 6.63, then it would be total 11.26, not 10.00 ??

Doesn't work that way on my calculator or in my head. LOL It's a minus $5.37 either way.

I know ya get the right answer by doing $10.00 - $4.63....But just seams like when ya subtract an even number it stays the same..I learned something I guess.

Not when you subtract it from an ODD number...

I mean the following to be humorous - You must be a whiz at balancing a checkbook. LOL. If you had $4.63 in your account and you float a check for $10.00, once it clears the bank, not including any penalties and over draft fees, the bank would love you if you insisted on paying $6.63 not the $5.37 that's due them. :o

-$5.37 is correct - it's the same as 463-1000 which equals -537 :)

Consider it as a number line problem. Remember them? :D OK... so we're starting at a point located to the right of zero (0) by 4.63 units, and we are going to move 10 units to the left (in a negative (-) direction). When we have moved just to the zero point, how many units have we moved?

Obviously, we have moved 4.63 units, out of the total of 10 units in the planned move. So how many units are left to move if we are to complete the whole movement? 10.00 - 4.63 = 5.37 units. With me so far?? OK -- so now we will move that distance, again to the left. Where do we now end up?

Yep -- at -5.37! Simple, right?? :+

I was 'counting' on a reponse from either you or Grogan - although a calculator is definitely easier!! :) :)

Actually, I would just throw the calculator away. If you need any more calculations done, you can just post them here and let us help with the answer.;)

4.63 - 10.00 or 10.00 - 4.63. It doesn't matter how you re-arrange the numbers, the magnitude of the answer will always be the same. Only the sign changes.

i think the second f in your screen name is throwing your beain waves off! :)

i have done the same thing with words sometimes. i'm talking the simplest words.

the conversation in my head goes something like this. how do i spell the word jet? and i'll spell it, j-e-t. but then i'll think, wait a minute, that doesn't seem right. the next day i'll think, "what's wrong with me". LOL

i call it being "parked on a dead brain cell".
