when I change my sig this evening all posts I made prior now reflect this change? Is this new or need I replace a transitor on my spaghetti strainer?

That is a global change because when any post is displayed it will connect to the sig and avatar currently referenced in your profile . Those things are not stored as a part of the individual posts, but are called from the server anytime the posts are viewed.
