"The UK goes on what they refer to as Summer Time at the same time we go on Daylight Savings Time, therefore it is always a five hour difference between civil time in the UK and eastern time in the US."

Shelly,

There isn't always a five hour difference between Eastern and UK time. At 9pm* EDT on Saturday (10/26), the UK will be setting their time back 1 hour, so until we set our clocks back (Sunday morning) there will be a 4 hour difference between the two. It happens the other way in the spring (where there is a 6 hour difference for that time period), so it's fair to say for 10 hours per year the British time is all screwed up, sort of like the way they drive on the wrong side of the road.

* (I am assuming that ukmitch is correct in saying that they set their clocks back at 2:00 a.m.)
** There is always a 5 hour difference between the countries using GMT, however.
