I would rather see people understand the simple words they use every day!

Learn when to use they, their, there, and they're.

Learn the difference between to, too, and two.

Learn when to use where, we're, and were.

Use then, and than appropriately.

Properly use you, your, and you're.

There is a big difference between the meanings of affect and effect.

These are simple things that everyone learned, or should have learned, in primary school, yet I see college students, and graduates use these words incorrectly in these forums every day.

I couldn't agree more Shelly. We came to this country when i was a young boy and i still shake my head in disbelief when i see that some american born citizens still can't master their own native language.

Hi, I'm with Shelly ( I'm nearly as old as he is).......Our language is being murdered!! What happened to I before E except after C ???
What about Apostrophes, Many people these days, when they write a word ending in S, add an apostrophe to all of them because they don't understand the possessive!!! I could go on all night!
I know language is dynamic and things will change - witness our own hobby and the number of new words and styles of expression it has spawned. All well and good, bit there's no excuse for sloppy spelling and grammar...........I think that the education system is failing many of our young people.
Sorry to rabbit on but I feel very strongly about this.

And then there are those who use all caps, or all small letters with no periods, or separation between sentences. Very difficult to read.

Good grammar is about as important now as spats, linen handkerchiefs, crinolines, sit down family dinners, etc. Life is too hectic, full of distractions, busy. The young are, like, totally into materialism and care about possessions, not "phraseology" (The Music Man). Look at the caliber of homework now compared to 30 years ago. Now you have to work on a project like a professional writer, editor, photo-layout artist, etc. They have to use spell-check to cut time. And they are impatient with the stupid way words are spelled with so many ending the same but sounding different, etc. We hated it too, but had no choice. And then there are a lot of people from different cultures that have english as a second language. Let's face it. We had TIME to learn spelling. How can you learn it now with satelite TV, DVD's, computer games, internet, chat rooms, and most kids have jobs too.

No wonder spelling has gone down the toilet. It's become a trivial detail that no one has time for or cares about. Like shoe polish.

I am willing to let their spelling slide. When they need to know it, they will pay attention. Some people may be just lazy typists.

Hey....did you ever have to look up a word in the dictionary but you couldn't find it? That happens to me a few times. You can't figure out what the first few letters of the word are.

Each of the words that Shelly cited were correctly spelled in his post, just as they usually are when they are being misused! The problem with spell checkers is that they cannot tell an ignorant author that a correctly spelled word is misused. For that we need to use a grammar checker... or simply apply what we are supposed to have learned in school!

It's outrageous how many misused words are found in commercially published books -- especially paperbacks -- now that the human proofreader has been replaced by an electronic one...

Simple... Turn that stuff OFF! We had TV and radio, records, and friends to occupy our time. All of that took a rightful "back seat" to the schoolwork/homework/chores trio. Now, it seems like we place entertainment and amusement above responsibility in importance, and we allow the machines to supervise the children. Kid's bored? Stick him in front of the TV, or on the PC to burn up a few hours. Read a book?? Only if it's online! :)

No... when they "need to know it", they'll just stick in whatever "looks good" and let it slide -- after all, that's what they've always been allowed to do before, and they've always gotten by with it...

LOL -- that's why they taught us all of those "silly" rules about spelling! I saw an ad once for a "phonetic dictionary" -- you would look a word up by it's phonetics (sounds) to find it's correct spelling. Have we really sunk that low?? Oh yeah -- I guess you have to know the proper pronunciation of a word to find it there, huh?

Stupidity is excusable, the stupid person is incapable of learning. There is no excuse for ignorance. Nothing marks a person as quickly as improper grammar.

Language was invented to allow one person to reveal their thoughts to another person quickly and accurately. We call it communication, and it is the foundation of civilization. The English language is particularly powerful, because of its rich vocabulary of words that allow the educated person to choose nuances and shades of meaning to precisely define the exact concept they intend to convey.

It is demonstrable that societies having rudimentary languages, that can only express thoughts with imprecision, suffer from arrested development of social, scientific, and technological systems.

There is no excuse for people, with the ability to learn, being unable or unwilling to use language effectively. It is a sign of intellectual laziness, lack of personal pride and a disdain for the persons with whom they are trying to communicate. In short, it is rude. It is also a sign of the dumbing down of society that we have all seen in recent years. A pandering to those too lazy to learn, and the result of an educational system that has failed because it is run by, and staffed by, too many inept or uncaring people.

Fortunately, it is never too late to learn. If one has been cheated by their teachers, or was too lazy to learn from them in school, there are many ways to make up for it. Why bother? Because you would not believe how many otherwise capable applicants have failed to get a good job simply because they could not write a simple coherent sentence, or speak like an educated person. Strive to learn something new every day of your life.

Hey Ropera,That was F ing funny!When it comes up in Win. media on my machine, it does not load fully and play.It loads a little at a time and plays a little at a time and that makes it difficult to listen to.Would do I need to do to have it load completely and then play correctly?

Thanks, Ropera. A great way to start the day. However, when I was growing up the word was never said and I'm too old now to change ingrained habits.

In addition, my English literature teacher at school always remarked that it was bad form to overuse one word - the sign of an educated person was a wide and varied vocabulary where many similar words would colour the sentences.

That's why I always alternate between f**k and s**t
