If anyone ever feels that they don't really understand computers or don't really know how to treat them properly, read this and feel better- there is always someone worse at it than you. I was downloading music files overnight and to cut down on the fan noise, decided it would be a good idea to cushion the noise by putting a sleeping bag over the case. It did cut the noise down but I woke up to find my PC heated so hot I could have cooked my breakfast on it. Luckily it must have shut itself down, because after leaving it to cool down a while , Windows rebooted as usual. The CD-RW drive wasn't so lucky and must have melted as the tray would only open one inch. I bought a new CD-RW today, connected it ok,installed the software, but the PC keeps hanging half way through burning a CD. Does anyone know the main consequences of overheating to a PC? Is it posssible I have done permanent damage, and what component/s would be likely to suffer most or at worst, possibly need replacing? As I doubt anyone has ever been stupid enough to do what I did, any approximate experiences, informed opinions or even guesses would be welcome. Best Wishes Joe
Im surpsised that it got that hot...it should have shut down. If the thing really get that hot and cooked, who knows what the damage could be. Your processor is probably damaged. Wow! I really feel for you. Giveing your tower proper ventalation is important.
Please tell me you had a few/WAY too many pints Joe!!!!! There are two parts to the word wisdom...wise and dumb. We SOMETIMES get wise as a result of learning from the dumb things we do. I know...i've managed to acquire a smidgen of wisdom that way. Sorry to hear about your "learning opportunity". :'(
Thanks all for your help, ROTFLMAO Ryan, luckily it didn't completely frazzle like that one, but the casing was hot to touch. Garbru I don't really understand either what exactly happened, because the hard drives did shut themselves off, but the mobo was still very hot. I might invest in new RAM Sid like you suggest, at least I hope it is that and not the hard drive like Shelly says it could be. I will run Scandisk in thorough mode and see what happens. Wish I could use being drunk as an excuse, that's what really hurts, it was a stone cold sober decision. I though that because the room was cold, it would't overheat. It's true what you say about wisdom coming from dumb mistakes, I just pray this is,t the most expensive mistake of my life so far... So...any newbies in the forum, remember, 1st lesson,
"Never put a sleeping bag over your PC. They don't like it!!!"
