"XP Pro Questions"

Just love the new OS. The only problem is that I can't find various setting controls. The driver for my HP1220Cse seems quite inferior to that which was available for Win 98SE. HP says there is no other one yet.

1. How do I turn off autoplay for my DVD & CDRW. Whatever I do, when I insert a CD it starts to load the program or play the CD. I'm logged in as Administrator - no help though.

2. Is there a control which sets the default spacing between the icons. Snap to grid separates them way too much.

3. I'm on a dial up modem. Seems slower at the PC911 site than when running Win 98SE. Anything to look for?

4. I'm having trouble setting up my network. The machine with XP Pro wouldn't take a name of SYSTEM 1, Only SYSTEM1. It would also not accept my Workgroup name of FRED. Haven't got the foggiest why. All works well in Win 98SE.

Love those growing pains.
Thanks.
Fred

Icon spacing, text, text colors and size are still handled as they were in 98. right click on the desktop, go down to properties and click on appearance and all that. You know about that don't you?
I DID have some trouble with vertical alignment and had to fool around with horizontal alignment a bit.....

To turn off autoplay open up my computer. Right click on the drive letter of the cd/dvd drive, Autoplay tab. Much can be done with this. Like not autoplaying a dvd, not autoplaying a cd, then autoplaying a cd with video on it. Kind of cool if you have the time to fool around and make it the way you want.

Question: I did go to autoplay. It had one of several choices - Mixed files, Pics, Video, Music, DVD. For each, it says Select Action or No Action & Prompt. I selected No Action. But when I close & insert a CD (data) the autorun starts immediately.

I must not understand what you're saying. Can you try it again, please.

That setting is for autolaunching multimedia content. It's not the same as "autorun", which launches the designated executable on mounting a disk.

You can either get TweakUI for Windows XP or change the value yourself in the registry.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\CDROM

You'll find a value for autorun in that subkey, toggle it to 0.

This also applies to Windows 2000. There's no setting in the OS to disable it anymore.

You better check that, go to Run, type gpedit.msc Go to Computer Configuration, Administrative Template, System, Double Click in "Turn Off Autoplay" in the Settings tab, click Enable and select the CDROM or all the drivers, click Apply.

There is better control on this feature in Windows 2000/XP as in many others through the Policy Editor Snap-in, as you can change also this and some other settings in the User Configuration part, so one user can have Autoplay enable while another can have it turn off (As pointed out in the Explain tab, if there is a cconflict between the Computer configuration and the user configuration, the Computer configuration will take precedence)

Dude,
I thought that you would never, EVER use XP!!! I too, am learning how to never say never. I'm glad you are using it so you can help in your usual selfless way.

On another note, one more time, what was that Samsung executable that could be used on any HDD to write 0s to every sector? Was it clearhdd.exe? It is still on the Samsung site. Can it be safely ( heh, relative term ) used on any brand's HDD? I have a friend who needs an app like that, and I don't want to steer him wrong.

Scott

Samsung's ClearHDD can be used with any IDE drive:

Thanks Sonny.
Yes, good point >>IDE drive. That is what he'll be using it for, but still nice to see that clarified for other possible users of clearhdd.

While I've never personally had a problem using clearhdd.exe on any IDE hard disk (it just clears what's important on a drive, it doesn't do any low level stuff where it can destroy information pertaining to the drive's geometry), I always recommend checking the hard drive vendor's site for a utility first. Such utilities are usually provided as part of a diagnostic tools package.

Good suggestion Mike. Yes, I use DFT for my IBM drives. My friend needed to find a program for his drives. I will pass along this suggestion as well.

My comments on #10 were directed to you.

Grogan. Thanks much. I disabled thru TweakUI. It's so nice that program installation is back under my control.

I must admit to being very skeptical about Win XP (Pro), but I have to say it's much better than I expected. Now all I have to do is learn where the basic stuff is controlled from.
