"System doesn't like to be on all night"

My system usually is on all night. Here are the Power Management settings going on right now. Monitor set to go off after 20 minutes. HD power downafter 3 minutes, and Screen saver in 5 minutes. I haven't always had the HD set to power down, just int he last day or so cause of my HD LED problem I posted about in another thread.

The computer is on 24/7. During the day, the system will shut off monitor and everything it is supposed to. It recovers fine when I sit down at it. In the morning when I wake up, and it has been idle for 8 hours or so, it doesn't like to come back. The screen will come back on and I can see my background, but no icons or taskbar. Doesn't respond to bringing the task manager up and ctrl-alt-del does nothing. I have to hit the reset button to get back up, and after that all is fine.

Been happening like that since I installed XP. Something that the event monitor picks up as a system error. ACPI something. Around the same time it gets this. I don't know if it is related, but I have a bunch of those errors.

Any ways I can check for conflicts with something? New to XP, but I find it similar to Windows2000.

I dont use power management settings(for the most part). Ive found them to be more problematic than anything. First off I never use screen savers...they serve no real purpose im my opinion other than interupting downloads and causeing potential problems. What I do is just turn my monitor off manually by the button when I plan to be away from my computer for any significant length of time. So right there cuts out any need for a screen saver or the "turn off monitor" setting. I also leave my hardrive on all the time too. I really dont think that the hardrive is really working to hard when your not actively clicking around opening files and running programs. Im no expert on the subject but I think that some power managment settings are really only beneficial for laptop users with exception of the UPS settings......I only use the part of power managment that deals with my UPS. Shuts down the system when it has been running on the battery for 15 minutes or so.

Try leaving the HDD's on and see if that works. I have to set a lot of systems that way to have them wakeup.

What is the release date of your BIOS?
You may need to update your BIOS to fix the ACPI issue.

Either that, or use a non ACPI HAL, and disable the ACPI setting in the BIOS.

Is your system ACPI compliant?

It sounds like when Win98 has trouble with Windows and the BIOS both doing power saving functions; they collide with each other and lock up the machine.

Another thing to root around for might be a program that is running automatically, like a virus scanner.

And, one thing that I do recall about WinXP, it will reorder programs on the hard disk during idle processor time to speed up system operation. That is an ongoing process, unless you use only the same programs all the time.

Thanks for the replies. I agree that the power management settings are best for laptops. I never use the hard drive power down until the hard drive LED thing I've been going through the last 2 days. I don't plan to leave it like that. I usually don't have a screen saver active, but sometimes I am in the mood for one, like I have the last week or so.

The monitor setting is handy I think, cause I don't have to think whether I left the monitor on when I leave for a while. I like knowing that it will power off after some time.

The problem was before I used either screen saver or hard drive power down settings. The monitor does not have a problem waking, as the screen will come back, system just won't be functional.

System is less than a year old, self-built. All ACPI features worked on previous OSes. I will double check that I have the BIOS features diabled, to make sure the BIOS isn't doing one thing and the OS doing another.

The only time I can reproduce the error is overnight. So I will disable everything for tonight. Just manually turn off the monitor, and see how it does in the morning.

If all else fails, try leaving a light on. I used to have to do that for my daughter, see didn't like the dark either.

Well, I turned off all the power management options, and it was fine. So I have it narrowed down to monitor power down, and HD power down. In the meantime I can shut it off manually. Someday down the road I would like to be able to shut off the monitor automatically.

I checked the BIOS, and all power management options are off. Could a program cause a conflict with ACPI? It says that it is ok when I look in device manager at the advanced computer management stuff.

The last ACPI error in the log was last night, probably when the HD and monitor still was powering down. It didn't have trouble coming back, but the log still got an error.

I will try disabling some programs and report any success.
