"checking the processor speed"

Hi everyone;

Is there some sort of command or utility in Windows 98se to determine the processor speed of the pc? If not, is it printed on the processor chip somewhere or on the motherboard? Thank you in advance

Do you have an Intel (Pentium) processor?

This information was provided by someone at this forum some time ago:

1.Go to Accessories/System Tools/System Information
2.Click on Tools
3.Select Windows Report Tool
4.Click on the blue Change System File Selections towards the bottom of the window
This will perform a short scan of your system files
Your processor speed, memory, hard drives will then show up.

It does work.

Thank you very much for the info. I have an AMD K-6 3D Now processor which should be 550 Mhz. However windows 98se says it is 439Mhz. Why does it show less? Thanx again

actually, it's even easier than that:

1.Go to Accessories/System Tools/System Information
2.Click on System Summary

the processor info will be displayed on the right.

Happy computing!

You can also use a program such as WCPUID to determine your CPU and FSB speed.

You may download it immediately by clicking on the link below.

I'm not sure why it shows it much less. For pentium users, or even AMD (I recall reading this is only for pentium users, but you can try it anyway, and tell us if it works or not), try and use this program. It might not be totally accurate, but it hasn't been off by more than 6 mhz for me.

This download called "showmhz" was closer, it rated my AMD at 499mhz. Thanks again

CPUID only tells you what speed it's rated at, not what speed it's actually Running.

Beg to differ Shelly, but CPUID ver 3.0 ( from H-Oda ) certainly does show the current running speed in real time. System and FSB measured in real time to single digits and FSB Multiplier.

Version 3.0 has a real Time clock checker, ( earlier versions may have had it as well ). I just checked my Duron 700@900 . FSB at 100mhz: CPUID shows CPU speed of 900.2mhz. FSB at 102: CPUID shows 918.15mhz.

Never saw version 3, but CPUID has always been a static code recorded at the factory to identify the CPU and prevent remarking of black market chips.

Shelly, I think you're thinking of the official Intel CPU Frequency ID Utility, which is primarily used to detect overclocked chips. H. Oda's CPUID does show current speed; it currently shows my overclocked 1 GHz PIII running at 1132.43 MHz and FSB at 150.99 MHz.

Aha! That explains it. You're referring to a utility program, not the CPU code. Thanks Treb.

ChickenMan, Treb, all

WRT overclocking the CPU, I would like to know if there is a way to O/C only the CPU speed and that's all. I can't seem to do that on my system. All I can manage to do is O/C the speed of system which affects all my PCI devices.

My system: Pentium 2: 350 Mhz: Aopen AX6BC Intel 82440 BX Chipset (ATX), 100Mhz, AGP, Ultra DMA/33, AWARD Modular BIOS 4.60 PGMA w/ext V1.0A Rev. 2.55 dated July 24, 2000, Win98 FE.

In the Award BIOS I have a choice of multipliers for the CPU and various choices for the system speed up to 133MHz. Changing the multiplier from 3.5 to 4.5 for example on the 100MHz setting produces no change. Changing the system speed to 133MHz however results in a 466Mhz processor speed but also affects all the PCI devices which I don't want to do. I am looking to change the processor speed only.

Thank you!
