I seem to get large icons which results in some being moved each time I go into safe mode (they are small normally). I would like to enter safe mode without altering the positions of my icons in regular mode. Anyone know how? TIA Ed
Safe Mode runs with a 640x480 screen resolution, which I'll bet you normally don't use. Because of that, the icons get rearranged to fit the lower resolution, and then we hae to put them back after getting out of Safe Mode. The only way to keep them from drifting would be to operate at 640x480 all the time. Ewwww!
You're welcome. BTW, for some reason it doesn't always work, so you might want to "Print Screen" your desktop. Store the picture in Word and it will be a bit easier recalling where the icons go - especially if you have quite a few on your desktop.
That's another reason to keep the icons on the desktop to a minimum.
I'll have to check out that link and see how it works for my Win98 SE box. I've found that XP Pro remembers where the icons are suppossed to be after you get out of Safe Mode. I'm guessing that's because it takes those settings right out of the individual User Accounts every time you log onto Windows.
Hi, JP. I guess I don't see the logic of keeping the desktop as icon-free as possible. Having many or only a few has never given me a need to go into safe mode. Of course, having only an icon or two makes it simple to re-position them after safe mode. But with the PC911 "endorsed" tweak - the link I provided in #2 above - it is seamless to return one or a hundred icons to their original positions. Try it, you'll like it.

Then you now have to rely on M$'s "New and Improved" Start menu. I find it preferable to still have my Icons on the desktop and use the patch refered to by Jim.
