"Computer Experts please advise"

I'm no hardware genius, but a friend is wanting to sell his Computer, has the following:

AMD ATHlonXP 1600+
Soyo K7A SKTA, DDR ATA100
17" ATX Tower w/300W PS
256MB DDR SD RAM
40GB Seagate 7200 RPM ATA100
CDRW and DVD 16X
Nvidia Gforce2 MX400 64MB
Soundblaster Live
Internet card
Fax Modem
Keyboard
Mouse
Windows XP disc
Ball bearing fan /w heat sink.

All the above for $900
Not sure about the Video Card and Motherboard. Sound second rate?

The unit is about 1 week old ( has financial problems ).

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Top of the line stuff, including MB and video card. Not sure about US but in Canada that would be a deal.

Looks good to me. You might want to get a healthier power supply. But that's no big deal.

I play alot of games like UT, Half Life, Return to Castle Wolf..., Links. Is the video card fast enough? It also has three spare PCI slots and two front USB connections.

Have priced building my own but with XP disc etc costs more.

Wish I could justify to my wife the purchase. Having this unit might balance me psychologically, but she has to sacrifice a better Xmas present.

He's selling today. No time to ponder. Hate being rushed.

I don't think $900US is really that great a price -- certainly not a steal with no monitor.

The deal breaker for me would be the version and the status of the XP.

If it's XP Home, try for $650; if XP Pro, $700. Then maybe split the difference if necessary.

In either case, find out if the XP has already been activated and/or registered with Microsoft.
If the license (EULA) is not transferable, it could become essentially worthless to you later.

If you ever change enough hardware so that re-activation is necessary,
you may not be able to do so in your own name.

He hasn't used it as yet. Dont want to haggle too much. Next door neighbour. He can already sell at that price. Also no tax.

Buy it!

Just might have to let the wife use it once in a while. Hey better yet pass yours on to her and consider it part of her Christmas Gift. LOL.

He thinks he's the Boss - hubby, I mean - but it seems that I have been the one carrying the load all of these 33 years...besides, this is the only way I get a 'present' from him for Xmas.

No weapons are needed Spezi...besides, my .gifs are on my computer...I am on daughter's computer now, and I didn't install any of my .gifs here... ...so you are 'safe'...for NOW !

I would love to get that computer, but knowing the 'other half', he'd have a 's**t fit' - *hearing mumbling about paying off my new car - 2yrs instead of 5 yrs - sheesh!*

I agree with Psycho, it's no steal. If you feel like doing the guy a favor get it, but don't think he's doing you the favor for letting you have it at that price.

i'd say it's worth no more then 700 dollars.....anything from a consumer /used usually isn't worth more then 60% of the orginal cost as far as i go when i buy something....

You could build the same system for about the same price, maybe a bit less. IMO, the only downside to it is the video card. I just priced a similar system for a friend w/ the Athlon 1800XP and 512 meg of DDR, with a GeForce3Ti200 and it came to $1000. No OS though. So I would say it was a fair price. If he built it himself, he's losing no money on it. If the OS is XP Pro, that would help.
