I have a PIII motherboard with a 550mhz cpu, the pc has a 8gb seagate hard drive, i tried to install another hard drive (20gb matrox), i had everything going fine but whn i restared the machine it kept coming up with an error at startup, the message given was something like "non system disk error, remove diskette and hit any key". after i tried everthing i could i removed the newly installed HDD but it still came up with the same error, rendering my motherboard unusable. any information would be greatly appreciated. Jason
thanks for the info, but the motherboard is still coming up with the same message, could it be someting to do with irq settings? i know a fair bit about pc's but not too good with certain settings.
If all you did was add another hard drive, there shouldn't have been any changes to the IRQs. The most likely problems are jumper settings or loose or reversed cable connections.
Behind every good computer... is a jumble of wires 'n stuff.

hard disk drive makes and models
the makes and models of any other IDE/ATAPI drives in the system
the current configurations of all existing drives (prior to new drive installation) as regards IDE channel (Primary or Secondary) and drive designation (Master or Slave)
the desired drive configuration following new drive installation (as in item above)
