"Autoexec.bat & Config.sys"

I am running windows ME on my PC. I have tried to make changes to autoexec.bat and config.sys, primarily to load DOS and drivers into upper memory blocks. whichever text editor I use the files are always overwritten when I reboot, reverting to their original text.
Does anyone know how to make alterations that will be retained permanently?

Can you explain how you are double booting between Windows Me and DOS?

And I doubt that will solve his problems as Windows Me will ignore anything related to loading DOS into upper memory and I have not a clue how he is double booting with DOS under Windows ME.

Explains everythng. Also gives another reason for tagging ME as a POS.

Remember that Me was made for those that do NOT tweak their machines. Any one that thinks that Me is POS, then they are NOT using it as it was designed. It was NOT for the power user, tweaker, gamer or anything above a "Out of the box" user.

Just out of curiosity, what would be the reason for loading dos into upper mem in Win ME?

Mackerel is probably playing an older dos game and mistakenly believes that old settings for the dos environment will make a difference when running a dos virtual machine.

With WinMe, you could probably create a modified EBD that included a config.sys and autoexec.bat file that would allow you to boot to an old version of dos in the manner that would best suit some game program. My feeling is that if you still have old dos programs that need those settings, it is time to upgrade to a Windows version or avoid upgrading the OS and stick with DOS or Win95.

Then that could be accomplished by making a boot disk with the config.sys and autoexec.bat files edited just for that purpose

Yes that's true Vera. You would include all the dos commands you want with a command.com and all the parameters wanted or needed for memory, dos umb, creative stuff and all that. Put it in the drive and boot.....
