Not sure what you're referring to. The last place you would want to connect a hard drive is to an agonizingly slow serial port. A USB 2.0 or a firewire port is what you would want.

Serial ATA is the follow-on to ATA-133, it will replace the current ATA standard next year. It has a small (4 or 5 wire) cable and allows faster data transfer; IIRC 150 mb/sec. The drives are due out in 2002 and will be backwards compatible with current ATA interfaces (But will of course operate at the slower speed). There will also be Serial ATA PCI cards to allow use of these new drives in older systems.
The narrower (and longer) cables should improve case cooling as well.
