"video card or monitor? going south"

neighbor called me over just now to look at her computer. Is Dell 550 PIII w/Rage Pro 128 and 15 inch IBM monitor.

Has been working fine and when she turned it on this morning, it booted up, but when you looked at the desktop, it was twice as large as the monitor. It actually scrolled from side to side and up and down! I checked all the settings and they appeared to be what she would have had. 800 X600, no active desktop, etc. by changing resolution it still was scrolling.

I went into safemode, removed the video card, rebooted and everything was fine. Does anyone know what happened, or what is happening?

ATi in the past has had multiple desktops and such as options, something like that might have gotten activated.

If you simply rebooted the machine and let Windows reinstall the display adaptor drivers, then the video card probably isn't running at it's best. You'll need to reinstall the Rage Pro drivers from the ATi installation disk, or from a fresh download from the ATi website.
