"mouse and keyboard cease to function"

Every once in a while, when I am in Win98SE, my keyboard and mouse simply cease to function. My computer isn't frozen, the rest of the processes continue to run, but my mouse and keyboard stop responding. At first, I thought this could bea motherboard problem, until I realised that this doesn't happen in WinXP, so it must be a software problem in Win98. I have the newest drivers of the two, a Microsoft Internet Keyboard Pro, and a Microsoft Optical Intellimouse. They both cease to respond at the same time, and again this only happens in Win98SE, and not WinXP. Thanks for the help that comes from this site, as it's helped me do a lot of things in the past regarding fixing my computers, and has even helped me fix other peoples computers! TIA for all the responses from you knowledgeable people in this forum!

Do you have any of that extra stuff running with your keyboard and/or mouse.....like the keyboard extras(one touch internet access and extra buttons) do you have the extra mouse stuff running?(like side buttons that configure with software to open programs and stuff)
If you do I recommend staying away from that stuff.....you dont need it and you have to have the prgram running in the back ground all the time for that stuff to work. I just dont see the point. Why have extra software installed and a program running in the background all the time just so you can push a button on your keyboard to connect to the internet or open a program? Why not just click on the Icons on your desktop? I have a microsoft keyboard with a few buttons up at the top that can be configured for that kind of thing, But I just didnt install the software...so I dont use em. I just use the standard keyboard keys and functions. Its just uneeded crap that can slow things down and cause problems.

Your computer is trying to tell you it is time to dump 98 and stick with XP.

Are they running in USB or PS/2? Have you tried running sfc to replace missing or corrupted W98 system files?

System File Checker. At the Start/Run command line type in sfc and hit Enter. It will scan your Windows System files for missing or damaged files and allow you to replace them with good copies.
