"boot cd"

windows 2000 in my ibm laptop, all of sudden, is missing some file and couldn't boot. i'm planning to install back win98. the laptop doesn't have the floppy drive. so i was wondering if anybody kind enough to show me how to make a boot cd and/or show me how to boot from an external floppy drive (actually, it's a super disk that can hold up to 120mb and also can recognize the regular 3.5 floppy disk.
many thanks to whomever.
by the way, is there a major difference between win98 and win98se?

Wow that sounds like a lot of work. Have you went into setup and tried to set the boot from floppy or boot from LS? Of course you will need a bootdisk for this to work. If this does not work, Let me know at buckfan1@home.com

buckfan1 we try to keep communication about a question in the forum, not in private e-mails. This is for two reasons. One is to have any useful solutions public so that they can be of help to others, the other is so that any bad advise can be corrected by others before the user does even more damage to their computer.

I have seen you request people to contact you directly in other posts. Please try to keep everything on the record.

Shelly

I'm not familiar with win 2000. Does it have a boot menu when pressing f8 key with the kind of choices win98 has? Such as safemode, command prompt?
If it does then things are workable.

hehe...maybe i'm not making myself very clear. i thought this should be a very simple thing to do, but i don't know how. i'm not trying to start windows from cd rom, but rather to make a boot cd like a boot floppy disk only it's a cd and boot from cdrom drive instead of a floppy drive (hope that's clear). what file should i burn to that cd to make it bootable from cdrom drive. win2000 on my laptop is somehow mess up. i don't know how to fix it, so i'm planning to do a clean install, but this time with win98 as the opering system. because i don't have a floppy drive, i can't make a boot floppy disk and access cd drive to install win98. my laptop does support boot from cd. so, i was wondering if anybody can show me to to burn a boot cd. after it enter the dos mode, i can install win98 on my laptop. i do have an external floppy drive (superdisk), i did try to boot from that external floppy drive, but it didn't work (that was why i ask if anybody know how to setup in a way that would make the computer boot from the external floppy drive.)
yes, when press f8, it does access all the command like safe mode and all those stuff.
sorry. i hope this will make it more clear.
thanks alot.

If your laptop's bios supports it, the windows 98 CD is a bootable CD. All you have to do is boot with it, and start Windows setup. Change the boot sequence in your laptop's bios setup configuration to boot from CDROM first.

Otherwise, even if you make a bootable CD it's not going to do you any good. There are plenty of howtos on making bootable CDs. Do a Web search, or start here:

If you want to do it manually, here's a very good guide..
