"Memory"

Hi all:
Would installing 256 megs (1-stick) of pc-133 memory & adding 256 megs (1-stick) later be a lot different than using 512 megs (1-stick) to start with? I read somewhere that one should use the smallest amount of pieces of memory to achieve the sum.
Thanks, Fred

What OS? 512 would be the max for any 9X OS. Even with 512, you have to address Virtual Memory problems. If you need more ram, go to W2000/XP where the limit is your motherboard. Use 2 x 256 as a matter of practice in case you suspect memory problems. It is easier to swap ram to isolate which one is bad. You can operate with 256 till replacement can be installed.

Sonny, I think you'll find that the Virtual memory problem is with more than 512mb

Sonny, excellent suggestion. Wish I had put in two 128s instead of one 256. Ah ha, an excuse to pick up another 256!!!

It would make no difference. It would make it easier to troubleshoot if one of the sticks went bad. I prefer having more than one stick in my computer for that reason.

It depends what your PC will accept. My motherboard has three slots and each can take up to 256 MB, but a 512 MB memory card will not work in any slot. YOur computer manufacturer should have that information at their website

But I guess that is ok, since I don't have much loaded on this machine...93% resources free ...WinME ...have 128 installed

Many thanks to all that replied. This is truly a great forum!
I plan on going to xp or 2000 soon so wanted to take advantage of low memory prices. I'll post when I try win98 with 512megs as soon as I get time to build the new system. CUL
