"PC keeps Crashing on Start-up"

Hi,

I am using a Compaq presario 5002US model and it keeps crashing now on start up. been doing this now for last few weeks and keeps getting worse. I try reboot, but now it takes almost 5-10 minutes even longer at times.
Also my CD ROM drives are missing I'm not a happy camper. lol
I ran the Scan Disc program but nothing shows up. It says a no bad files found. Can any give me some advice as what to do?
I may have to take it to the shop later but not sure what the problem is.

Thanks for any help.

Tom

Have you tried starting it in Safe mode?(hit F8 as it's booting)
If you can, then run some more diagnostics.

Hi,

Yes, I have tried safe mode. Ran Scan Disc last night while it was in safe mode. Is there any other things I should do while it's in safe mode?
I'm still new to all this and would appreciate all the help I can get.
lol.

Thanks.

One other thing. I notice that the light on the ROM Drive keeps flashing when I try to Reboot and keeps flashing even when there is no CD in the Drive. When I click on my Computer Icon the two Drives are not there.

Have you attempted running your virus scanner or attempted a system restore in safe mode?

No, I didn't know I could do that before. Think it would help? I just got done running Virus scan amoment ago but nothing showed up. Should I run it again in Safe Mode?

You might want to run Spybot S&D http://security.kolla.de/

But I think you have a driver problem. When you boot into Safe Mode, the difference is that Windows doesn't load most device drivers. The fact that you can function in Safe mode indicates that you have a bad or wrong driver installed for some device. Did you install any new hardware prior to the problem arising?

Hi,

Sorry I missed your post. Nope, no new hardware except my Lexmark Printer/Scanner. I don't think that would be it.

If you were able to run it normally, I would not worry about running it in safe mode. I had assumed the only way you were able to access windows was in safe mode without having a crash.
Open Windows, go to control panel, select system, select device manager, see if any errors (exclamation points or question marks) are in your device listing.
In addition describe your system crash - Blue screen of death? Error message? etc.

When you say the two drives are not there are you saying your local disc C or hard drive is not showing and your CD drive is not showing?

No, I mean the disc Drive where I load CD's Sorry for the confusion. My C And D drive are showing, just not the E and F Drive. My PC had a built in CD Burner (Never did get it to work, so I never bother with it)

Well if the Lexmark was the last thing installed, uninstall it & see if the crashes go away.

As far as your CD's, see if this applies.

Unable to Access CD-ROM Drive After Installing Windows 98/Me
<http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;189526>

SYMPTOMS

After you install Windows 98 or Windows Millennium Edition (Me), you may be unable to access your CD-ROM drive.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you have a dual-channel integrated device electronics (IDE) controller installed in your computer.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, follow these steps:

1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click System.
2. Click the Device Manager tab.
3. Click the Hard Disk Controllers branch to expand it, click your IDE controller, and then click Properties.
4. Click the Settings tab.
5. In the Dual IDE Channel Settings box, click Both IDE Channels Enabled, and then click OK.
6. Click OK, and then restart your computer.
7. Test to determine if the issue is resolved by trying to use your CD-ROM drive. If the issue is not resolved in Windows 98, perform the troubleshooting steps in the following article by clicking the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

190303 How to Use Real-Mode CD-ROM Drivers from Windows 98 Startup Disk
