"reinstall win2000 using usb cd drive"

hello,
I have an ibm thinkpad laptop with win2000 install on it. It's about 4 years old. The internal cdrom drive is crew up (doesn't read the cd anymore), and it does not have a build in floppy drive. I have an external cdrom drive that uses USB that I am using right now. Now I want to a clean reinstall of win2000, but the problem is that the win2000 cd does not boot with my external cd drive. Is there a way to make the cd boot with my external cd drive? if not, is there a way to still do a clean install of win2000?
thanks

A couple thoughts. Not sure if any will work? Need to re-read this a bunch of times.

Requirements for Using the "WINNT32 /SYSPART" Command
<http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;241803>

SUMMARY

In Windows 2000, the /syspart parameter for Winnt32.exe causes Windows 2000 Setup to copy all the necessary boot files and temporary Setup files to a drive and mark the partition as active. You can then install the drive in another computer, turn the computer on, and continue with Setup.

MORE INFORMATION

To use the winnt32 /syspart command, the following conditions must exist:

* You can run the command from a Microsoft Windows NT 4.0-based, or Windows 2000-based computer.
* The server or workstation must contain two hard disks; the second hard disk must be the destination disk.
* The second hard disk must have a primary partition. The /syspart switch sets this partition as active..
* The second hard disk must be formatted so that Setup can copy files to it.

There are no limitations as to the hardware in the target computer.

How can I install Windows 2000 on my Toshiba Portege 3110 laptop?
<http://www.winnetmag.com/Article/ArticleID/27583/27583.html>

A. Because the Toshiba Portege 3110 includes an external CD-ROM drive that connects to the laptop through a PC Card, you can't configure the system BIOS to boot from a CD-ROM. Also, the standard Win2K installation disks don't recognize the CD-ROM drive, which causes the OS installation to fail.

If you can connect the laptop to a network, you can set up a Microsoft Remote Installation Services (RIS) server and install Win2K from the network. If working from the network isn't an option, you can perform the following steps (some of these steps are specific to the Portege 3110, but you can modify this process for any CD-ROM driver):

1. Create an MS-DOS boot disk (you can download the necessary files from http://www.bootdisk.com ).
2. Copy the CD-ROM driver file to the boot disk; for the Toshiba laptop, this file is arccd.sys, which you can download from the Toshiba Web site.
3. Edit the config.sys file on the boot disk and add the line

DEVICE=A:\ARCCD.SYS

4. Edit the autoexec.bat file on the boot disk and add the line

MSCDEX /D:ARCCD01 /L:E *gt; NUL

5. Insert the boot disk into your laptop and reboot--the CD-ROM drive should be accessible as drive E.
6. If no partition exists on the laptop's hard disk, you must use Fdisk to create a partition, then format the partition using the FAT file system.
7. Insert the Win2K installation CD-ROM, then type

cd i386

to navigate to the I386 folder.
8. Start the 16-bit version of the installation procedure by typing

winnt

9. The Win2K installation will start and copy all files to the local hard disk. You might want to convert the partition to the NTFS file system during installation.

After the installation is complete, you can use third-party software such as PowerQuest's PartitionMagic to extend the NTFS partition to use more of the hard disk.
