"Help"

I recently had to do a system recovery on my computer. It seems that all of the programs that I had loaded no longer work. The programs are there, but can't find certain files. Is there a way to correct this without having to reinstall everything???

It would be good to know what Version of Windows you are using. The first thing to do is make sure you have not been infected with a virus. That would have to be fixed first. You can run a free online scan at http://housecall.antivirus.com/

If that comes up clean, and you have XP, run System File Checker (SFC) by inserting the XP CD and running the command sfc /scannow from Start/Run. It will check for any missing or corrupt system files and replace them..

Welcome to the forum!

I'm running Win98. I have checked for virus with McAfee and nothing was detected. The computer seems to be running fine now, expect that all of "my" software doesn't work. I hope there is a similiar way to do what you suggested for Win98. Any advice is much appreciated.

Thanks

When you say System Recovery, can you go into more detail? Did you have to reinstall Windows via your Restore CD or something to that effect?

The HP computer comes with 2 recovery CDs. I believe one is for the "system" and one is for the applications. I did a recovery with the first CD for the system. I thought I was reinstalling windows, but now I not sure what I did.

FYI: I have also checked the registry and the applications seem to be listed there, their are some I can't find though. But the apps will not work.

Remember the recovery disks revert back to the original installation of Win98.Whatever had been installed after the first installation has been changed.

Does that mean there is no way to get the programs running again with reinstalling everthing?

You wiped out your Windows Registry and replaced it with the original one. You can fix it by reinstalling all the applications that don't work to the same folders that they are in now. This will replace the Registry entries that are missing now. You will not lose any of the data you may have created in these programs.

That's what I was afraid of. I was hoping there was a way to do this without reinstalling everything. If not I guess I don't have a choice.

Is the registery the only "thing" that needs to be fixed or does the reinstall modify other programs as well?

Is there a way to prevent this from happening if I ever need to do this again. Can a back-up of the registery be created?

Get an imaging program and use it. Save image to another location, i.e. 2nd HD, CD. Your registry is backed up every time you re-start the PC and can be accessed to restore the last 5 good copies.

I have (had) Norton Utilities installed and I know it was running the imgae program. How can I get the "image" back? Norton is not working properly either.

That's not the kind of image we're talking about. You need to use Norton Ghost, PowerQuest Drive Image, or Acronis True Image. An image is a backup of everything on your hard drive that can be restored if your computer gets messed up. Use an imaging program frequently enough so you always have a recent backup if disaster strikes. If you ever use your restore disks again, you will wind up with the same problem.

I don't know in your case for sure, but some OEM "Restores" only restore to the same state that you bought the computer in.

It is possible that the "Restore" has wiped the HDD with a fast format or kill boot sector and put in a new one.

If you do have important data you may need to use an unformat or data recovery program to get it all back.

If you tell these guys which make/model you are using that would help.

I would go with "Shelly's" suggestion.
