"sound system"

Ive decided that I want to get myself a decent sound system for my PC. Ive got a sound blaster SB live in this thing but I only have these 2 little sony speakers. They are ok for wav files and such but not really cutting it for decent mp3 listening. I was up at best buys yesterday checking out the sound systems....seems like some of them are really nice but seem to require some kind of special sound card. I really dont want to get a new sound card right now....just a speaker setup I can plug into my SB live card and have some decent listening. Id like something with a sub woofer if possible with this card. any suggestions. Im hopeing that I can stay in a price range that is not out of control. Anybody here know if a decent set up I can get?? Ive got a best buy near me and a circuit city near me.....I should be able to get someting at one of those places.

If you are just looking at some fancy computer speakers I like the polk audio's I have some little ones w/ a sub that sound waaaay better than they look.
If you are looking to spend a little more and want an amp and real speakers look at KLH. They are not the best amps as far as THD and things like that, but for the price I can't argue. They are on sale at Fry's (uggh) like every other week so watch the ads.

On that particular sound card, what's the freq range? I know my Creative Live has four speaker output and good low end capability. I would say if your card will support 50/60 hertz then a powered woofer would perform....

how do I find out what my frequency range is?? I dont know?? As far as price range I was hopeing to stay around a 100 bucks or less. That is if I can get something decent. I dont need to turn my place into a disco but id like some BASS; right now Ive got these 2 sony speakers and no sub woofer so there is no bass at all. I really dont want an amplifier or anything that sounds a bit much. something that sounds clear with some bass would be cool.

I use the Cambridge FPS 2000 Digital four point surround. It sounds as good as many home sterio units and should be quite reasonable now. The four speakers are 3" cubes and the subwoofer is very precise. I got it about two years ago for $130. It was designed to work with the SB Live series

I think SuperCzar missed the part about, "stay in a price range that is not out of control"

I've got midiland mli-491's (4.1 system) that sound pretty good out of my Santa Cruz and were $38 at buy.com. They're not Dolby Digital but they weren't hundreds of dollars either. I think a Polk 2.1 system is going to start at $50.

Maybe you should define what you mean by price range

Garbru, I picked up a Microsoft Digital system a couple of years ago and like it a lot. I haven't seen them around, but, I'm sure there are lots of choices out there. The important thing to do is to be sure what you get has a good sub-woofer - one that'll rattle your socks!

I have the Altec Lansing ATP3 system. It isn't a surround sound speaker system, (though they do make one called ATP5) but for about $70 you get pretty amazing sound. I like it. Best Buy sells it.

The specs sound really good, the reviews are good and the price is around where I wanted. SO thanks for the info. ATP3 is for me today. It should work with my sound card right??....sound card> SB Live Basic (WDM) Model CT4790

I have the ATP5's on one of my systems, and they sound great!! They have more features than just 2 more sats too. You can set them for Stereo x 2, Reverse, Dolby, etc.

What it seems to me is that whatever he buys will only respond to a frequency range that his card can produce. I asked about that and until he gives us a real answer on that then speculation on spkr selection is moot. He doesn't have an SBLive.....

From http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?submit=manufactory&catalog=60&manufactory=1137&DEPA=1 you can get the Cambridge speakers I use. They are marketed as Creative, but for the price, $39.00 plus $10.00, they can't be beat for sound in a small speaker system, The only thing I don't like is all the wiring involved. I have the separate volume control taped next to my keyboard and it's use in controlling volume is instictual rather than looking up for it. Once in place, these little guys pump out enough to rattle the walls with very little distortion at high levels. Stereo separation is great with a booming bass.

Garbru,

Any sound card should be fine. By the way, if you look hard enough, you can find that ATP3 model in off-white. I have both the black version and the off-white version.

I scored! Went to Circuit city and Got the Lansing ATP3 and Ive got it right here. I paid 85 with tax. Not to bad all things considered. I could have gotten it cheaper online but then Id have to wait and also pay shipping charges. SO im happy with it for 85. I havn't gotten it hooked up yet...but I heard it on a display in the store. Sounded really good. I have to take a break, go down to my favorite cuban restaurant for the buffet lunch then I will set this thing up when I get back. Cant wait to hear this thing! yeaa haaaa!!!

I got it all hooked up and it sounds nice. A lot of Bass coming out of this here sound system. Thats what the doctor ordered. haha
I had to put the subwoofer on my desk because there is no room underneath my desk for it, but it does very well right here.
I snapped a pic with the digital.
thanks for the info folks.

You may want to make room on the floor for the sub. Don't worry where, bass in non-directional. When I had mine on the desk the monitor would go wavy from the vibrations. But maybe I listen to music louder than you do.

You might check if the sub is magnetically shielded. I've got a different AL model, but most say that they are not shielded and should be kept away from your tower and monitor. I think they recommend 2.5 to 3 feet min.

You will get stronger bass response with the woofer on the floor.

shelly is definitely right garbru. I worked in the audio department in circuit city for 2 years. Everything I have read says to put the sub on the floor and about a 1/2 foot to 1 foot away from the wall, corner is best, for the best bass distribution. Good choice on the speakers. I'm a speaker fanatic, I've got polks running off my stereo/dvd player and klipsch running on my puter. Lady up stairs doesn't appreciate it, but I do!

I agree with Al and rpeyton80 about the woofer being on the floor. This brings up another important point: The actual placement of the subwoofer relative to the listener is not critical. This is because human hearing can't distinguish the source (location) of very low frequencies.

This thread reminds me of something I've been wondering: How critical is the nature of the surface upon which the subwoofer rests? I have mine sitting directly on the carpet and have wondered what would happen if I were to put a piece of plywood under it to keep the sound waves from being absorbed by the carpet. Any informed opinions?

sid, that would make a difference in the bass your sub gives, but only if your sub is a bottom firing sub. If you sub fires from the side like most pc subs do, and home ones for that matter, then the difference wont be nearly as noticable. However if you take a look at a higher end sub maker like velodyne for instance, almost all of their subs have a built in piece of wood with about a 1" clearance under the subs.

Thanx, rpeyton80. Mine is a bottom-feeder (Attempt at humor. You see the bass fish is a bottom-feeder and my subwoofer emits the bass from the bottom. So, my bass is a lot like a bass.)

What you say makes sense. In the living room, I have my huge Mitsubishi subwoofer sitting in a corner near the projection tv on ceramic tiles and the bass is outstandingly rich. As for my computer's sub, I think I've got a scrap of plywood out in the shed just about right for the job.

Bass isn't a bottom feeder. Maybe bugle nosed bass (carp) but not largemouth.

I stand corrected. Thanx, Myk. My only experience with bass was when I was a student at the U. of Texas, Austin, and a friend dragged me screaming on a fishing trip to LBJ country. The bass we caught were dirty damned devils. The trip was made worth it when we found a cache of baby rattlesnakes. The little buggers were about two inches long and cute as puppies. They had an amazing resemblance to their full-grown counterparts that, luckily, we didn't have to greet that day.

Ok, Im going to put the woofer on the floor. Not only for better sound quality but as someone here mentioned it shouldn't be near the monitor or Tower. I checked the info that came with the sound system and it said that the 2 satalight speakers(small ones) are safe to be near other components, but the sub woofer is not safe because of the magnetic thing going on. I had it a bit close to my monitor. Not a good Idea. Now the only problem is that I need to get a couple of extension cords because the 2 of the cords dont reach. Its always someting. haha Back to the store to buy more stuff. why cant they just put decent lenght cords on things??

is that from the origanal cords that came with your sound system?? I cant believe that the cords arent even long enough to even reach to the side of my desk on the floor. Its a floor unit (the sub woofer) they should exspect that you might need like 10 good feet of cord at least. Ive gone through this with other things too.... very agravating.

Yes the originals. I don't think it's 10' from the sound card to the sub but there's a healthy bit of wire there. I wouldn't doubt if the speakers each have 10' of wire.

What Im wanting to do is put the sub whopher on the floor on the left side of my desk plush with the face so its just to my left. My tower is on the right side of my desk on the top. So I need the wire to wrapp arond the backside of the desk and make its way to the tower. Give that my desk is like 5 feet long or so. Im goona need like nine feet of cord or so to do it right withough yanking the crap out of the cords. The cords seem to be like maybe 6 feet on this thing. SO Im gonna have to extent 2 of them. The output cord from the pc that goes into the whoffer and extend the right speaker wire so it will reach too. The left side speaker will reach ok withought an extension. I wish I could just put it under in the middle of the desk but there is no room. Ill get it handled today. I should have just bought a big table instead of a desk...would have had more room underneath. All the draws and the back panel just dont allow for much room underneath this thing.

Hi,
Correct me if I am wrong(and I am sure somebody will) but the speaker wires should be kept to the same length to balance the load. That is if you extend one you shoud extend the other by the same amount.( I am not including the subwoofer here),

Jim

Ok I didnt know that. about speaker wires haveing to be the same lenght for ballance. Actually I figured out a new solution to my whole problem. My problem is that this desk I have sucks for my computer system. There is no room underneath this thing and it is all paneled in. Its a horrible time trying to get behind this thing and running wires and tuff like that because the way the desk is. So im gonna go to office max and get one of those big tables and move my systm to that. One of those big black tables with nothing underneath it....except the legs of course. That is what I need. Then I will be able to get under it and have my Bass woffer on the floor in front of me. I will also be able to put my UPS underneath and run all the wires with no problems. Im gonna try to get a table big enough for all my crap. printer, scanner monitor tower etc. Right now Im so cramped with this junk desk its out of hand. Ive got my scanner on top of my tower and my printer on a separate end table. its a mess. SO now this prodject is getting even bigger. man..what a guy has to do for some decent sound is just unbeliveable. hahaha

Okay, you are corrected. The speaker wires do not need to be of equal length. Speaker wire can be several hundred feet long wihtout having a significant affect on the sound. Any wire used for speakers should be a minimum of 18 guage.

Shelly

yep, shelly is right on about the speaker wire. I use 18 guage for my computer speakers, but I blew all kinds on money for my home speakers. I have the 12 guage monster wire on those. It really does make a difference.

yeah i know sid, i'm still using the factory wire that came with my klipsch speakers. I would like to put some monster cable on them, but heck, thats effort

No seriously though, that brings up a good question, do you guys know if radioshack or wherever has stereo minis that i could splice the monster cable into?

I assume you do know Sid, but the smaller the guage, the better the wire.

I put the sub whoffer on the floor like it should be and Shelly is right it sounds much better. I still need to get extensions to the speaker wires because right now im like stretching the things across my keyboard and desk to just get it hoooked up temp. Ill need some extensions to be able to set it up more permannently. Anyway the sub whoofer on the floor is much better than on top of the desk. Sounds very nice. This is a very nice speaker system for 80 bucks.
