"computer lag"

i've downloaded this this japanese animation and it is in subtitle. on my laptop, the sub title goes well with the sound. however, when i take it to my desktop, the sub title is like a second or two off from the sound. what could cause this lag on the desktop? thanks for any response.
laptop: p4, 2.66GHz, 768MBram
desktop: p4, 2.20GHz, 640MBram
thanks.

1l, the most obvious difference between the two is memory. Animations seem to consume lots of memory so any increase should help. Anything consuming memory(like stuff running in the background) is a no no. Be sure you don't have any nasties by running the appropriate scans.

I was able to stop the voice to subtitle lag by reducing the screen size a little bit. i have a 19in monitor. i wasn't running anything big in the background. do you still think memory is what causing this problem? or maybe video card?
thanks.

It also depends on what player you are using. If using the latest version of Media Player Classic, it defaults the output filter to Bicubic. While this does look nice, it eats memory like a mother. You may want to change it to Bilinear.

If not Media Player Classic, it depends on the codec, and the resolution of the video.

Might also explore some of the "Advanced" screen settings.

Display Properties | Advanced | Troubleshoot -> Hardware acceleration.
