"format harddrive. layout: simple, type dynamic"

Hi,
I recently bought a new sata harddrive for backup data and installing a sata harddrive for the first time. It formatted the layout as simple and the type as dynamic. I noticed that it is totally different from the other drive that are in there, ie, layout as partition and type as basic. Are there any big difference?s Which should it be? I'm trying to google a good article on this to read, I like to know others opinion.
Thanks.
