"Worth upgrading?"

Good day all,

I'm currently using a PC with this motherboard and thinking of upgrading the ram from 4gb to 8. It's an old computer and I'm wondering based on this motherboard if it's worth it... thoughts?

Coincidentally When I built my first computer, it was with that motherboard. When the MB failed, I went on Ebay and purchased another board that would be compatible with the memory along with a dual core CPU and and another video card and a new power supply. That board must be around 10 years old.To me it seems like 4GIGs of memory is enough. What operating system are you using? If it was me, I would not add more memory.

As always it depends what you're doing.Although 8 GB has been standard for a while now it still depends if what you're doing is maxing 4GB out I need at least 8GB while gaming and even then it's a little light at times. If what you use isn't really ram intensive no if it is yes and depending on running 64 bit windows as well.

As usual, this forum comes through with the help. Thanks to Daniell and jbmcmillan.

To answer the questions: Daniell, I'm on Windows 7 and Jbmcmillan, I'm using a 32 bit system.

I'm someone who surfs the internet with multiple tabs open for any given browser I'm using on top of other software I maybe using at the time (chat programs, music app etc). The browser becomes very ressource hungry when I use it this way so I thought ramping up my ram would help with that.

Yeah 32 bit will only address what you have currently and will not recognize the additional ram.You would have to reinstall to get 64 bit as there is no upgrade path from 32 to 64 bit.If all you're doing is browsing, email you'll probably be ok.

Yeah. Your 32 bit system will totally ignore your added 4 gb of ram. Only a 64 bit system can see it.

I wasnt sure about my CPU so I downloaded CPuZ and realized I have a
AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+ so essentially I would only need to re-install Windows 7 as 64 bit to be able to take advantage of extra ram?

One last thing on this matter, when I checked the memory I currently have my max bandwidth says "pc2-6400 (400 MHz). I found some memory to purchase almost identical to the one I have except that this one says "800Mhz". Does that make a difference?

400x2=800 so sounds the same.DDR double data rate. PC2-6400 is 800 MHz ram.
