"I have a problem when I boot up my win 10 computer"

It seems as though I have two MBR that are interacting with each other. When I boot up each morning the computer boots up just fine, but the internet connection icon in the system tray has a red x on it. When I hover over it I get a message that says "No connection-None available"

I then restart the computer and it boots up just fine as before, but this time I do have internet connection.

When I shut down the computer for the night it shuts down very fast with the monitor and computer shutting down almost simultaneously.
When I reboot the next morning it is deja vu as the process repeats itself.

I have considered disabling the first boot up in "Device Manager" and see what happens, but hesitate to do so until I can get some help or input from those on this forum who are much more knowledgeable than myself. Has anyone ever seen or experienced this problem before?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

So are you saying that you are prompted to choose from 2 different installations of Windows 10 every time you boot? Can you take a picture of the screen and post it?

Thanks for the reply. I am sorry for the delay in answering you, but I have been gone for several days.

Actually I don't have a choice or a prompt when I boot up in the morning. The boot up is perfectly normal, the desktop and icons are all normal and I can use the system for whatever I wish as long as internet connection is not needed. The internet connection icon on the task bar has a red x on it and when I click it a message appears that basically says "not connected, no connection available".

I then restart, not shut down and then reboot, but warm boot or soft reboot or whatever it is called and the computer boots up exactly as before, except this time the internet connection icon shows me as being connected to the internet.

That is why I made the comment that it seems as though I have two separate MBRs, but in reality I suppose that the system doesn't shut down properly when I turn it off at night and the media files or something is missing.

I could send pictures, but the only difference is the internet connection icon in the task bar, one with a red x, the other connected.

What is strange is that it did work for awhile in windows 10, but then it started acting up. Any ideas? I hope so, because I have certainly ran out of them. Thanks for your help.

See if anything here is helpful: Sometimes after startup network is not available and I have to restart

Have you tried opening a web browser to see if there actually is no connection or are you just assuming that the network icon is correct and rebooting?

I don't know what you are talking about. There is no boot up option in Device Manager.

You may have faulty hardware, or you may need driver updates. Please post more detail about your computer hardware(brand/model of computer or motherboard) and whether you are using a wired or wireless connection.

Hi Ttech,
Thank for the reply. I will try to clarify some of the comments that you are referring to. My choice of semantics was probably not the best to use and I will try to be a little more concise in saying what I meant.

I have tried to open a web site when the red x is on the internet icon and I get a message saying "Firefox cannot find the server" at whatever web page that I am trying to open. Therefore there is no connection to the internet.

I realize that there is no boot up option in Device Manager and what I should have said was that when I go into Device Manager under Network Adapters there is a yellow triangle on the Intel(R) 82578DC Gigabit Network Connection. When I click on that a window opens that says "This device cannot start (Code 10)Operation failed-Requested Operation unsuccessful. If I right click on it I have the options of disabling or uninstalling the driver and that is what I meant when I said that "I have considered disabling (should have said uninstalling) the first boot up (should have said at first start up in the morning.

My computer is custom built with an Intel DP55WB Motherboard with an Intel Core i7c Processor. I am using an Ethernet wired connection. The problem seems to be only related to the network adapter.

I hope that this might help. Thanks again for the help.

Did you take a look at the link I posted in reply #3. Other individuals have had the same (or similar) problems. Some of them apparently were able to resolve the issue.

Jim.

Sorry Jim,
I owe you my apologies for not seeing your posts sooner. I greatly appreciate your responses and I will look deeper into the articles later. My board is no longer supported and I am not sure if I can do any updates, but will find out in the next couple of days or so. I am having company for the next few days and I will want to make a full system backup before proceeding.

I will post back when I can get a little more time. Thanks again for your replies.

To repeat what KJT is referring to in his link, do you have the latest BIOS, LAN Driver and Chipset drivers?

Here is a link to the downloads from Intel for your motherboard.

Hi Ttec,
Thanks for alerting me to Jim's posts. I somehow completely overlooked them, but I have now replied to them.

Thanks for the link and I will check it out more thoroughly in the next couple of days or so. I have company right now so will be unable to do much before that. I did do a little looking and my Intel board is no longer supported so don't know if I can update anything or not. However, I will give it a shot. I will be treading unfamiliar waters by doing so, because I have never flashed the Bios or updated a chip set before, so I will be making a full system backup before I do anything. Still makes me a little nervous.

I may have to just live with it, but hope that it can b resolved. Thanks for hanging in there with me.

I will post back when I get the chance to spend sometime exploring the link options.

This may sound (and be) a bit simplistic, but, I think that, if you put your system to "sleep" instead of shutting down, you will bypass this particular peculiarity. I'm suspecting that, for whatever reason, your computer is, or could be, slooooow in kicking in on the internet connection on a cold boot. You might try sitting tight for awhile and see what develops without any further action on your part. Just a thought.

Thanks Sid,
For your suggestion. I appreciate it, but I have tried the "sleep" method and it did not work. When I awoke the computer it had gone back to no Internet connection. I think that I will just live with this annoyance for awhile and see if it might start working again.

I thank you for taking the time to send me the suggestion.

Hi Ttech,

I have checked out the links that you provided to me via Jim, but I can't really find a way that I can flash the BIOS since the motherboard is no longer supported. I guess that maybe I am too chicken to try this even if I did find a way, because it might cause me more problems than I have now. I think that I will just live with this and see if maybe down the line it might start working again. It isn't as though it is a real problem, but rather just an annoying one.

I do want to express my appreciation for all of your time and help that you gave me and I will be checking this forum more often.

Hello, I have four theories about what could be temperamental.

The first two have to do with applying Windows update 1607 also known as the Anniversary update:

Theory 1:

Have you tried to restore using an older media? If so the computer might have thought that the updated boot record could be from Linux and written a new MBR. source: http://www.easeus.com/partition-manager-software/windows-10-1607-update-stuck.html

It might be looking at the C partition which might have been accidentally set to active. According to the article here: https://www.partitionwizard.com/partitionmagic/accidentally-marked-drive-c-active.html

Theory 2:
The second question I have for you is Do you have Linux distribution on this disk or have you ever used this disk for any Linux distro?

Explanation: In the Windows 10 anniversary edition Microsoft reworked their kernel to make it more like Linux. The update has thrown many people off guard who have have used other operating systems along side the Windows system. This has been particularly troublesome for those who use LVM (which stands for Logical Volume Management. It is a system of managing logical volumes, or filesystems, that is much more advanced and flexible than the traditional method of partitioning a disk into one or more segments and formatting that partition with a filesystem).

Theory 3:
Question: Have you ever had success with Windows 10 and the current combination of motherboard and other hardware you are using?

If not: Check your hard drive in Disk Management , is windows installed to a GPT or MBR disk. Mine is MBR. You can't install Win 10 on UEFI firmware with secured boot enabled and CSM disabled if the disk is MBR. The disk has to be GPT. Is it possible for you to tell us a little about who made your computer (for example Dell, HP so we can help look at the motherboard manual)

Source: https://www.cnet.com/forums/discussions/no-csmsecure-bootuefi-options-in-bios-cant-install-win10/

Theory 4:
Have you ever used or attempted to use bitlocker on this computer.
