"Windows 10 Anniversary Update Running 12 Hours"

Even though I had specified ‘Defer upgrades’, I awoke this morning and discovered that Microsoft had begun installing Windows 10 Anniversary Update sometime last night. At 6:30 AM, the screen said that it was 83% complete. Now, at almost 3:00 PM, the screen says that it is at 91%, which has not changed in the past 5 hours. The update process is approaching 12 hours. This is the message on the monitor:
“Working on updates 91%.
Don’t turn off your PC. This will take a while.”

“This will take a while” Is a HUGE understatement.

What should I do? Let it continue to run? Power off the computer and then power it back on, hoping that doing so doesn’t completely screw up everything?

If the update ever finishes, can/should I uninstall the update? Or should I just learn to live with it, in spite of all the negative reviews regarding the Windows 10 Anniversary Update?

I have never had an update run this long, and I’m wondering if this is just another case of Microsoft’s arrogance and gross incompetence.

Help!

Richard

The update finally finished, and now I anticipate many hours of making my computer look and behave the way it used to.

If you get fed up trying to do that, as I did, you can always revert, as I did, in which case, based on my experience, the Anniversary Update, will not rear its head again. Think of it as a small perquisite for all the hours wasted in the unanticipated updating.

Jim,
Thanks for responding. How can I revert to the previous Windows version? Via 'Settings/Update & Security/Windows Update/Advanced options/View your update history/Uninstall updates'? I can't believe that it would be that easy.

I think I followed these instructions - https://www.cnet.com/how-to/how-to-uninstall-the-windows-10-anniversary-update/ - which are almost identical to what you have listed.

I'd make a backup before reverting - just in case there's a problem.

I'd try to make it work because soon you won't get security updates if you don't.The Creators update is coming soon so you will be dealing with that as well. The anniversary update really didn't change anything on mine that was obvious.

I agree. You're correct. Sooner of later, I'll have to bite the bullet and celebrate the Anniversary - hopefully later.

Several of my older programs which worked fine pre-Anniversary didn't want to work correctly - though they might if I was willing to put in the time and effort - which I wasn't at the time.

As far as security updates, last I checked I can still get them for XP - which I only keep around in case someone has an XP question that I need to research from within XP.

Jim.

Lol Well you can't get updates for 8 just 8.1 the XP thing was a hack really. I'm just saying these major updates for 10 are coming faster than in past o/s's and I think it will continue.

I went into "Services" and disabled "Windows Update", I re-enable it when I have plenty of time and then I let the PC do its thing. It may be the wrong thing to do but it works for me.

I’m the OP in this thread, and I wanted to update people on my experience with being forced to update to the Windows 10 Anniversary Update.

As I stated in an earlier post, the update and installation finally finished after running for 12 hours (my broadband speed is 50 Mbps), and then I spent many more hours setting up the computer so that it looks and functions as it did before the upgrade.

As jbmcmillan and KJT suggested, I’ve decided to stick with the update and try to make it work for me; however, Micro$oft is not making it easy.

The biggest problem is that IE11 is now approaching the point of being unusable. The problem is that when I have several tabs open in IE, after a while the contents of the tabs disappear, leaving only a white page. The names are on the tabs, but no amount of refreshing the pages will bring back the page contents; the content portion of the screen remains white. The only way I’ve found to use IE again is to close it and then reopen it, after saving all the open tabs to a temporary Favorites group. After IE is running again, I open the saved tabs in the temporary Favorites group, and everything is fine … until the same thing eventually happens again.

Note that this problem never happened before; it began immediately after I upgraded to the Windows 10 Anniversary Update.

Any ideas about how I can fix this problem?

I don’t want to use Chrome, Edge has too many performance issues, and I don’t like Firefox.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Richard

You've just eliminated nearly all the viable alternatives. IE is old technology, and will disappear not too far down the track.

IE is the only browser I DON'T use in W10. Nor am I ever likely to.

Opera?

Yeah, IE will eventually disappear, but I'm assuming that MS is replacing it with Edge. I've tried Edge several times, but I have found it to be lacking, and it bogs down my computer, requiring me to run CCleaner to remove all of Edge's residue in order for IE to run well.

Perhaps MS's Creators Update (in April?) will fix Edge, but given what I'm going through with the Anniversary Update, I have absolutely NO confidence in any significant improvement.

Regarding Opera, I used it many years ago, but found it to be lacking; however, because of your suggestion, I might take another look at it.

Have you tried opening several tabs in your usual manner, then opening a new page in a new window and adding tabs to this new window? And, repeating, if necessary if you really do have that many tabs open at once.

Jim, I've seen the problem occur with only 3 or 4 tabs open. It seems to happen when I've had the tabs open for several minutes.

I'm surprised that I'm the only one who seems to have this problem. My computer is plain vanilla with nothing unusual.

UPDATE: While posting this response, the problem reoccurred, and there were only 2 tabs in the IE window.

Closed tabs can be reopened by pressing "Ctrl + shift + t" - one press for each closed tab.

I have no idea if this will work with tabs that have disappeared but it should be easy for you to try.

Also, do you have tabs set to open on a separate row? If not, try it. If so, try it the other way.

Jim.

The tabs don't close; they appear on the row of tabs, but the contents of all the tabs are blank, just white.

Anyway, I've decided to give up on this issue and start using Chrome or Opera, hoping that MS might eventually fix IE or make Edge usable for me. My experience with Edge was that it degrades my computer's overall performance.

Thanks to everyone who commented regarding my problem.

Richard

I don't think there will be any work done on IE except for security fixes as I don't think there's a priority there for them especially in 10.I know it's familiar but once you move away and get used to something else you'll wonder why you bothered with it at all.

You have certainly shortened the odds with your dislikes, bite the bullet and use Chrome, and Edge is OK once you get used to it.

Not to be hating Microsoft or advocating other operating systems but For a LONG time Microsoft has been a industry leader but not its being challenged by the likes of Linux and Mac. I see this competition as being very good for driving innovation particularly in the graphics processing aspect. I've found Linux Mint to be a wonderful operating system. Mozilla has been working hard on B2G OS and Google has been working with Chromium OS and Safari, obviously a Mac thing. This might be because Windows, no matter how good it is relies heavily on Since cost prohibits me from buying a Mac, I am left with a good alternative in Linux Mint. Looking around at web developer conferences I see a lot of Macs. This may because the graphics processing engine that Microsoft includes is slower. However, there are new things around the horizon. Microsoft is making their operating system more like Linux using a similar with process calls using pico processes. I also see project Vulkan driven by the khronos group as a good innovation. Around November 2006 we saw different ribbons and this was largely driven by the SVG and Windows presentation framework innovation. Around November of 2007 Mac released their competing Quartz graphics processor. I'm not saying that Linux is better but since there are various distributions there is more competition than Microsoft would like to acknowledge.
