"Can't keep default browser"

I have reset FireFox a dozen times as the default browser. It lasts for a couple days, then the message "Firefox is not your default browser" Click on set as default, etc. Set it as default via Control Panel, etc. etc. I'm wondering whether CCleaner defeats the default assignment,... or maybe something else such as scanning for virus's. Ideas? I have started using Chrome, and like it, but I prefer FF's home page.

Sorry, I don't understand "I prefer FF's home page". A browser's home page is whatever you want it to be.

Windows 10? If so, after making FF the default browser though Control Panel check the nominated default browser at the following location:-

Settings > System > Default Apps > Web Browser

Setting thru Control Panel doesn't seem to be as cast iron as in earlier Windows. Some defaults seem to need to be set in both places.

Did this start when you installed Chrome. If you make Chrome the Default browser on initial installation, it hangs onto that like a Velcro covered leach. And of course, the default Installation setting is to make Chrome the " Default Browser ". Gotta watch them danged little check boxes....

Here's are several ways to correct the issue. Note: This is for Windows 7, but same procedures for Win 8 and 10.

I think I may have solved the problem. When I traced FF on my computer, I found that there was a 32 bit and a 64 bit listed. I uninstalled the 32 bit version as I'm running a 64 bit Win 10 and, so far, it's sticking.

Humor me, if you don't mind.

Go to Help > About Firefox. Does it say 32bit or 64bit?

Edit:- Cancel the above.

You're pretty much right.

I've had both installed since last June, but haven't used FF64 because at the time it was pretty developmental and many extensions didn't work with it. Your post got me curious, so I've been doing a bit of fiddling.

What I've found is basically you can't run both at the same time. If you have FF32 open and try to run FF64 you get another FF32 window. If you close all FF32 instances and try to run FF64 you get FF64, but FF64 knows FF32 is your default browser, so you get THE MESSAGE.

So at a guess you have somehow been switching between FF32 and FF64 and inadvertently switching your default browser accordingly. Now that you only have one installed you should be OK.

And somewhere between last June and now FF64 is far happier with extensions. So I shall probably pull the plug on FF32 myself.
