"Replacing Vista"

My wife is currently using Vista. Since support for it is running out, I am thinking of what to do.

1. Buy a copy of Windows 10.
2. Install Ubuntu and save $100.
3. Buy a new computer.
4. Build a new computer.
5. Keep using Vista

I see the above as my options.

Happy with Vista?
Comfortable with Vista?

Ever had issues with malware?

Happy with the existing computer?

5. Keep using Vista & don't worry about it.

The time comes when you need to replace the machine, or when the use of your particular OS limits the software you can run... Then at that time see what options there are.

(I say this as I type on XP - with no support. I say this as my other computer, Win7, has long had updates disabled, so you might say, no support. For the latter, its not like I wouldn't want *security* updates, its just that updates don't work & I'm done with trying to figure workarounds for MS purposely ... how to put it ... trying to force everyone into Win10.)

She has no problem with the present computer. She uses it for surfing the web and for business. My concern is that it wont be secure and easily hacked. I personally use Ubuntu 98 percent of the time. I don't know whether she would be happy with it.

Lumbuntu has a windows style menu and is very light on resources. It also uses the Umbuntu repository. Try her out on a live CD. She can always use another more secure browser than IE and use Vista until It's time for a new Computer.

That is where I would start to worry.

Personally I would go with W10 with Classic Shell.

Yeah, I went kicking and screaming from my beloved Xp to 7, and after finally got used to it, I feel like I got Shanghaied into 10. Jury's still out. Wife's laptop is XP. Only email and light browsing with Chrome for her. I need to babysit it every time something strange shows up.

I couldn't even install Chrome or FF on a friends computer. When he saw that he decided to move on.

Daniel take a look at Linux Mint. Very user friendly Windows like interface. What browser is on the vista machine, IE9?

FireFox installs fine on XP. I have the latest version on an old Dell D630 Laptop with XP Pro.

I notice that Windows 7 Pro is also available at Kinguin for under $30.

That sounds interesting...
