"Windows 10 pro low memory warning"

The past few days I have been getting a Your computer is low on memory warning and sugesting I close some programs etc. I have looked at a couple of possible solutions by changing the size of your virtual memory but I canceled out of it. I had read by some users who tried this got stuck in a loop when it came time to reboot the computer. Under system it says I have 4GB Ram installed but only 3.56 GB usable)
This usually happens when I am on line using the Chrome browser. Just started a couple of days ago. Any suggestions?

Is this a desktop? 4 GB is a little low these days.Have task manager open while browsing and check what is using the most ram.

Yes it is a desktop. Thinking back, this all started after I installed Office Libre.
Could that be the culprit.

Look in Task Manager and check Processes Memory tab and see what's using most of the ram.

I read this post on a surface pro with 4GB mem using Firefox. Opened Task Man and no other apps or windows opened was using 41% of mem resources. Opened Libre Office spread sheet and it was only using .1 more so that would not be the issue. I would look to Chrome and any add-ons that might run. Also, like it or not, Cortana is always working in the background and in the top 5 hoggers even if you don't use it.

Most Windows versions have a built in Screen Capture Program. Usually under Accessories. It's called Snipping Tool. Pretty simple little App, Gadget, Widget or what us old timers would call a Program.

I have saved a partial image of my task manager with snippet. Now I have to figure out how to get it here. I tried copy and paste and that didn't work I probably have to upload the file somehow. Going to get some sleep now.

Explaining how to take, save, and upload a screenshot is probably a good subject for another thread.

What's important here is that you tell us what the applications/processes are that are using high amounts of memory, the percentage total amount in use, and the size in MB of the highest memory usage apps.

For example, for me the two highest usage applications are Windows Defender and Superantispyware in the high 60's in MB usage but this is inconsequential as Total Memory Usage while typing this is 37% for everything running right now. IE is just over 11 MB with a couple of pages open.

So, what are your highest usage apps? I suspect it's probably just a lot of smaller usage apps and processes that add up to a high memory usage. Probably some of them can be stopped from running automatically or uninstalled if you no longer use or need them. For that, a screen shot could be helpful.

Jim.

I agree I have Chrome open which is highest followed by Defender.Checking in Task Manager is the only way to see what's going on.

Nothing sticks out other than Google Chrome. If you have a lot of Chrome windows open, close a bunch of them.

What is the total percent of Memory used as shown in the 2nd column?

You might want to click on "Options" in Task Manager and checkmark "Always on top". Resize the window smaller by dragging the sides in using your mouse cursor. Then, drag it to a corner of your screen - or anywhere you'd prefer - and you will be able to monitor your Memory usage while actually using your computer, Uncheck Always on top and resize the window when you're done.

Most of the percent of CPU usage are 0 or near 0. total % of CPU at top varies up to
about 13 %. Total Memory at top is 59%. Google Chrome seems to be the highest user of both Memory and MB. Sometimes as high as 300 to 500 MB.

Is the memory shortage message coming from Windows, or is it originating with Chrome? If you can, please show us a screenshot of the actual message you are getting. If that is not doable, maybe an exactly worded listing of the message.

An excellent point. A quick Google search returns an abundance of "Out of Memory" topics related to Chrome. Some even claim to have "solved" the problem.

After reading about the Desktop Heap problem, I believe this may be the answer. But, what have I added to cause this. My computer was operating fine for over a year with windows 10 before this started. It worked fine up until office libre was installed. Don't know if and how this caused the problem. I would switch to Firefox , which I used to like but one person said that changing to Firefox did not solve his problem. Thanks for the info which at least gives us a peek into the problem.

The event I forgot to mention is that I have recently added several web pages to the Bookmark Bar as a quick way to get to them. I now have a fairly long list. Wonder if that is what pushed it over the edge.

You might want to consider downloading the Microsoft Media Creation tool and burning the latest Windows 10. An upgrade from your existing Windows will totally re-wright your operating system keeping all your programs and data as they are without changing anything. It's possible after all this time you might have some Windows problems. Error messages are not always what they say and can be caused by other things.
