"Computer shuts off"

My wife's computer just died. When I push the power button it stays on for a few seconds, then shuts off completely. This is a homebuilder 8 year old computer. I am thinking power supply. Can it be something else?

Check to see if cpu fan is turning might be stopped tripping thermal protection. But it does sound power related.

Also check your thermal paste or pad (it doesn't last forever before it gets hard and cracks). Inspect the heat sinks and make sure they aren't matted with dust or have lifted from the motherboard for some reason. I have seen screw seats pull out of the board and soldered hooks come loose and let a heat sink lift in a corner.

Early this morning I took the cover off and did a close examination. The heatsink/fan was half off of the CPU and the paste was dried up. The fasteners that hold the heatsink on are rotting away. Can they be replaced, or must I replace the entire cooler?

Thanks for the informative replies.

Pictures would definitely help here. If you can't do that, at least give us something to go on, the model of the motherboard, processor, whether it's a heatsink you got with the processor, or a third party, rotted parts are plastic or metal. We don't know anything about the hardware at this point.

Behind every good computer... is a jumble of wires 'n stuff.

I should have mentioned that it is the cooler that came with the processor.

That is a LGA775 socket and I don't see any reinforcement for the cooler on the back of the board unless it was something that came with the cooler. Is it the X bracket that is failing or were there threaded sockets pressed into the board. The only picture I can find with any detail is on Newegg and it just shows the back of the board with holes in it. That would lead me to suspect there was an X bracket with threads that failed. It might be replaceable. https://www.amazon.com/uxcell-Heatsink-Cooling-Backplate-Motherboard/dp/B00GN7Z20W I don't do Intel so I'm not really as familiar with the boards but the plastic retention plate on Amazon looks like it would fail from years of heat.

Looks like the back plate bracket, a clean heat spreader and some arctic silver should have you going for another eight years. I think those processors were pretty good at protecting themselves from overheating.

I do not think that the holes in the MB are threaded. How does it attach?

The back plate retainer provides the threads. Look at the link from Newegg. Hover over the retainers for detail. They show both sides of the bracket retainer. The nuts embedded in the black plastic retainer is the bottom of the retainer. The other side that shows the threads that are raised goes through the 4 holes in the bottom of the motherboard. The four screws from the heat sink fan screw in through the top of the Motherboard sandwiching the motherboard between the retainer and fan heat sink for extra support. I take it you didn't build this computer or the bracket retainer was already in the motherboard when you got it. From your picture I believe the threaded barrels are still on your heat sink and came loose from the backing plate.

Thanks for your input. I built it so long ago I hardly remember anything. What I do remember is just pushing the screws down and they locked into mb. I never gave it a thought after that. I will look at the link. Thanks again for your informative reply.

GreyFalcon I looked over the link on Newegg. Something very strange. I do not remember ever seeing a back plate. I do not see one now.

The original heatsink was just those push pins that spread when you press them through the holes if you can find an original it would just push through and spread once you have them lined up the correct way.You just turn them to release, the one you have might still be functional if not aftermarket ones will come with a back plate that does have threaded holes or bolts. You might just buy the pins for that heatsink.

Thanks that clarifies things. Small fragments of plastic broke off and dropped into through the MB. Question, if I buy a backplate, how does it attach to the MB?

Wow, I'm getting old 70 next Sunday. I forgot about those miserable push pins. Something bothered me about the motherboard picture. Are we looking down on the white nylon broken off bottoms of the push pins? If that is the case, four replacements are all that is needed. I had worked with the boards with that system but never installed the pins. Does the white nylon portion of the pin push up and lock from the bottom of the board?

Here's how the OEM Intel heatsink is installed and removed.

Daniell,
Keep in mind that depending on your case, if you get a third-party heatsink that comes with a backplate, you will probably have to remove the motherboard to install the backplate.

If you're lucky, your case may allow access to the back of the board without needing to remove the board.

The case that I have has a removable motherboard tray. When the mood hits me I will deal with it.

I think this one would work without and modification. At my age I don't need it to last too long.

The cpu cooler arrived today. Two days early. I installed it. It appears to be functioning without any problems. I am not thrilled with the way it is mounted. I would prefer if it was screwed in rather than four flimsy plastic anchors.

If I ever build a new computer using Intel, I will use back plates and screws.

For future reference, if the pins fail, can I cut them out of the cooler, install bolts and use a backplate to secure the same cooler?

probably better to get an inexpensive adequate cooler that is designed for the socket that comes with a backing plate.
