"Video Problems Destiny 2"
Thu Dec-07-17 12:38 AM by GreyFalcon

I was happily getting into my new game, Destiny 2, when the computer turned off. Absolutely dead. I cleaned the computer, re-seated the processor and got nothing but a light on the motherboard. I tried my old GTX285, same thing, no response. Removed the video card and the computer fired up. I scrounged through my shed and found an old video card that fit the slots, no particular power requirements, no fan. After turning the power supply off and on the computer fired up but I had to run an old monitor. So It's kind of working but what happened? At first I thought it was my GTX970. It might be but the same thing happened with my GTX285 and I know that is a good video card. Then I thought it might be the motherboard but it runs the old video card so that is unlikely. Do you think the power supply might be the problem. It's a EVGA 850 modular. It runs the computer but could it have gone partially bad. Both video cards require two six prong additional power plugs. Any suggestions would be appreciated. The game was absolutely stunning on a 32" Sharp TV that I have been using for a monitor and ran flawlessly until the lights went out.

The only thing I can suggest is put the computer under load and check with a multi meter on one of the 6 pin plugs if the voltage drops below specs then probably power supply. Otherwise maybe motherboard or video card. The only way to check the video card is in another computer.

I am at a bit of a disadvantage at the moment and don't have access to another computer to test the card. I will assume the card may be all right because I tried another known good card and it acted the same way. I know the computer will not even try to boot unless those cables are plugged into the video card. Both cards require two cables with 6 pin plugs. I am getting video on a low power video card in the same slot so I took a chance and ordered another power supply. It has to be that or the motherboard and I'm betting on the power supply. I will open the old power supply and inspect the internal components just in case there is some physical damage to see. I didn't hear much of a sound when it went dark and that could have been my speakers. I am getting no voltage reading from the ground pins to the three +12V pins on both cables. I would assume I should have 12V between ground and +12V.

Should have my new 750W Power supply tomorrow afternoon. Called EVGA and they will RMA the 850W supernova G2. When that arrives it will go on the shelf for a future Ryzen build. Tech support confirmed the video card power cables were bad. It has also been a sporadic problem with some of those power supplies. Very pleased with EVGA with their handling of my problem.

Wouldn't you know it, the power supply came today and It wouldn't do anything. Put my old EVGA GTX285 in and it fired right up but the old card throws an error in destiny 2. Won't be playing that for a while. Good news, EVGA is also sending a RMA for my EVGA GTX970 FTW with a free shipping label because the power supply failure took out the video card also.
