I found that Avast had been installed without my doing anything except to update my Win 10. I don't know whether the Win update installed Avast, but I have been satisfied with Windows Defender. I uninstalled Avast, and Defender was there after a restart. Could the update have installed Avast? If Avast is superior to Defender, I can get it back without any problem. Advice?
I believe Avast comes as an add-on with the last Ccleaner update. It is necessary to uncheck a box down in the small print to avoid installation. Actually I remember unchecking two boxes though I don't remember what the other one was to install.
Defender is an improved version of Microsoft Security Essentials for Windows 10. It's pretty good. I ran my laptop on it for a year and had no problems whatsoever but I prefer ESET. When I was repairing computers I had a lot of problems with machines with Avast on it. I rate it down with McAfee and Norton. It was too invasive for my taste.
Nice to see a a lot of familiar faces. I just got a new computer with Win 10 on it. I want to install an antivirus program called Vipre. Has anyone here tried it?
Is it necessary to disable the windows antivirus prior to installing a new additional AV or can the windows AV run with any other AV I add?
Is it really necessary to have additional antivirus?

Usually any av you install will automatically disable Defender but I would check. Can't comment on your choice as I've never heard of it. I'm the wrong person to ask as I find most a/vs annoying and intrusive so I only use Defender with no problems.
