"Netgear router fopar"

Monday I installed a new Netgear router at a friends house. He had Adams Cable and their modem did not have wireless capability. He has a new Smart TV and a Play Station 4. I figured no problem, just connect the router to the modem then the PC to the router. Well first the router wanted to download the Netgear Geni app along with some other app. It kept trying to connect to the internet with no success. Clicking on the Next button produced a chance to win $400 by entering the router serial number. Trying this also failed.
The Geni app was trying to download from the internet but the router was not connected to the internet. As a test I tried to ping yahoo. the address returned was 192.168.1.1 which is the router.
In desperation I unchecked the two apps and X'd out of the give away and the router established an internet connection. The firmware was poorly written since you can not download an app if you are not connected to the internet.

Just a point of information.

My next challenge was to setup a Play Station 4. I am not a gamer and the owner is 86 years old! It took a while to finally get his Monti Carlo race game working. I did have a problem with an error message that the DNS server could not be found. Since the owner is not going to race against others, I figured he could just bypass this message. Well it is annoying him. I did find an instruction on how to set the DNS on the internet. It is unique for each country. Next week I'll be back correcting this problem. Nothing is straight forward and easy.

fopar = faux pas?

As for the Netgear Genie, there should have been a way to setup the router without it, but Netgear does want to steer you to use the Genie software. That way the can get more demographic info from you including your email address.

I'm not familiar with the PS4 so I don't have any input on the DNS, but a specific DNS for a game console seems odd to me.

Behind every good computer... is a jumble of wires 'n stuff.
