"Computer Just Died"

My wife's computer suddenly stopped working. There is no video output. All of the fans continue to spin. Tried different monitor. No difference. No beeps when turned on. Any suggestions will be appreciated. It may be time for a new computer.

Thanks in advance

Assuming this is a desktop computer, start removing/disconnecting all peripheral devices one by one to see if anything brings it to life. See if anything changes after any of these steps.

- Disconnect all external devices except the monitor. Disconnect printer, keyboard, mouse, USB hard drives, flash drives, etc.

- Open the case, disconnect data and power cables for all drives.

- Remove all add-in PCI and PCIe cards, including video card if there is one. Listen for beeps when you power on.

- Remove all RAM modules. Listen for beeps when you power on.

- While you're poking around inside, look for bulging or leaking electrolytic capacitors.

- If you have a voltmeter, check the CMOS battery, some motherboards won't POST if the battery is dead. If you don't have a voltmeter, try replacing the battery, you should be able to get one for $5 or less.

- The last thing to try is to remove the CPU heatsink, release the latch for the CPU socket and carefully jiggle or slightly lift the CPU. Then carefully latch it back into the socket and replace the heatsink. Don't do this step if you're not comfortable doing it.

You could also try a different power supply, but I'm assuming you don't have a spare.

Behind every good computer... is a jumble of wires 'n stuff.

Thanks for your informative reply.I disconnected the hard drive and the CD player. The computer posted. I did not get beeps because the speaker wire was knocked loose. I changed the BIOS battery. I then went into the BIOS and manually entered timing and voltage for the memory. It seems to be working now. I had a package of 2032 batteries. I hope that they are good. I paid 99 cents for 9 batteries.
