"Cannot delete folder from recycle bin: filename or extension too long"
Sat Feb-03-18 04:10 PM by Digiti 123

One of my .flac files in a folder of music was giving me this error and was unplayable so I deleted it to the Recycle Bin.I now I cannot delete it from the Recycle Bin "filename or extension too long" error. Please advise. Thanks.

P.S. I was able to drag and drop the one offending file from the Recycle Bin back to the desktop but the error remains.

There is a nice little registry entry that started out in Windows Vista that works in all operating systems since that may help, called Take Ownership. It works from a drop down context menu with a right click on the file. It might also identify the file as corrupted so you can get rid of it. It is a free download and comes with two entries to double click on. One to install the entry and another to remove it. Another method would be to use a linux live CD or USB to find and remove the file. Puppy Linux usually has all the tools you might need. The easiest way would be to have the file on a fat32 drive where Linux would see it if you can move it. There is always a way to do it but it might take some looking around and I'm sure there will be other methods suggested.

Have you tried renaming the file first?

Yes that was my first approach I tried but it brought up the error in question.

I tried moving the folder to root of C: then deleting it but that did not work. I then tried using IOBIT Unlocker but that also failed.

You can move the file around, try moving to an external drive/sd card, then format the drive (or remove it)....

Otherwise for a nagging issue like this, instead of fiddling around, I'll second the Linux option, and Puppy does work well. Although it's been forever since I've deleted files from a booted live usb drive, some may not have write access. Haven't needed to use one for some time other than for installing.

Have a blank usb drive, download something like this http://distro.ibiblio.org/puppylinux/puppy-xenial/64/xenialpup64-7.5-uefi.iso , then download this https://rufus.akeo.ie/ , start it while your usb is plugged in, check to make sure the usb is selected, to the right of "create a bootable disk" the little cd icon, select the file you downloaded, start, and ok/select any default, wait. Then reboot the computer, boot from the drive (varies from system to system, sometimes f11 gives a list, or enter your bios to select boot order). If it doesn't work, I/we can find another one that should, I could test something out.
