"Motherboard installation problem"

The standoffs do not thread well into the case. It seems like a mismatch between the standoffs and the holes in the case. I paid $35 for the case. It would cost me more than that to send it back.

You're using the standoffs that came with the case, right?

Behind every good computer... is a jumble of wires 'n stuff.

absolutely! I contacted tech support. They emailed me a shipping label. I now have a choice. Replacement or refund.

I am considering setting up the board without being in the case. This way I would know whether all is well. What is the minimum components I would have to install?

Did the standoff come with the case, or with the motherboard? There are typically 4 kinds of screws in a desktop computer. Thumbscrews can, but shouldn't be used to fasten motherboards, as they can be awkward and the heads can be too large. Fan screws are wrong. M3 hex screws might work but they will not hold well. I suspect that's what you tried. In most instances, the right screw for motherboard mounting is the #6-32.

The right screws usually come with the case or the board. Any computer shop will have handfulls to give away.

Going without standoffs is risky, as you may short out the board.

AS I previously indicated I used the standoffs that came with the case. They were the ones that had threaded holes in them in which to install the screws that attach the motherboard. I was thinking of testing the components outside of the case.

I have been there with the standoffs and screw size. Luckily I have about a five lb. bag of various computer screws from my repair days. I would check a computer shop and take a standoff to fit. Otherwise you will cause yourself possible problems. If anything the shops are overloaded with screws.

I installed the processor, the cooler and the memory. I put the memory in slots 2 and 4. I just realized that because of the way I oriented the cooler, I wont be able to put memory into slot 1. Since I have no immediate plans for adding more memory, I will leave it that way for the time being.

It was the standoffs that would not screw into the case.

The motherboard was sitting on top of the box. Anyway, I had a long talk with the techs at Asrock. He suggested several things. He then determined that the board was defective.

My replacement motherboard and case arrived. The case is still in the box. Today I installed the processor, cooler, and memory and the power supply. As before I shorted out the power pins. This time the cooler fan spun indicating a good board. Tomorrow I will deal with the replacement case. Hopefully the threading in the case will allow me to install the standoffs.

I am ashamed to say it, but I spoke too soon. I could not get the motherboard to post. I tried everything suggested by the technician. He said that it was very unlikely that the board was defective. All of this with a bad case of bronchitis. The company gave me an RMA and told me to leave the processor and memory on the board. Hopefully I will have some resolution to this problem. I still did not open the replacement case and check on whether the standoff will thread in to the case. I have about 2 days left to mail in the rebates.

Thanks Gray Falcon. I just heard from the motherboard company. I then called and spoke to the technician. He said that the BIOS was corrupted and they are sending me a new board. Since I could not post, this was nothing that I did. The new board was tested with my processor and memory. It worked well together.

YUP! Great advise! Once I got a MSI board back in the Win 98 days, the latest and greatest. It ended up in the trash can and I have never used anything MSI after that fiasco. Just as well I only use Asus and have had very good luck. I had one Ethernet connector go out on one board of many.

I'm assuming you meant sata and usually you want the native controller rather than any third party like Marvel etc consult your manual it will tell you which one is the AMD one. You'll also want AHCI mode to take advantage of trim which optimizes a ssd.A fresh install of windows in that mode or if you're trying to install it to an old install in ide mode there are methods of getting those AHCI drivers installed so it will boot.

I found a beep code chart on line. My category was not there. The closest it came was 5 long beeps indicating no video card. Perhaps the fact that I am not using a separate video card is causing the beeps. The technician told me that the purpose of beeps is to determine why it is not posting. But since it is posting normally, I should just install the windows. He said that if the beeping bothers me, I should remove the speaker.

It reminds me of the fiasco I had with the MSI board. I would make them make it right but perhaps with another model that has solid reviews. With all the problems you have had they aught to give you a better board. You know if it continues it will become a trash can liner and you will face a total loss.

Yesterday I installed Windows 10. Today I will install the motherboard drivers.

Thanks so much Grey Fox for your continuing support. I went out for lunch today and was able to relax. Suddenly I remembered the password. This is my problem. I am used to Ubuntu. I know nothing about Windows 10. I put in the motherboard driver DVD and could not figure out how to find it, or install the files from it.

I am a lubuntu LXDE 64 fan. I will bet you will really love Windows 10 and never really go back. You could open the files on the CD and find the .exe for each of your installs or go to the motherboard sight and download the latest drivers and Bios updates as they become available. Go to this PC from the start menu find your DVD drive, rt. click on the drive icon and you will get a drop down context menu that will give you all the options you need. Purchase Start 10 from Stardock ($4.95). It will give you a standard start menu that you can customize and makes navigating the guts of Windows much easier with a fraction of the steps.

I am now on my new computer. For some reason I was only able to install some of the drivers. It seems to be working perfectly without them. Are they vitally important? I could not install Realtech audio. It is working fine without it.

Windows 10 is real good that way. It may contain most the drivers for your motherboard. At this point considering the multiple repeat posts (I can't imagine how you did that) and the fact that windows is running, I think I would recommend a lot of sleep and continue the refinements later after you have caught up

Thanks for your kind and informative assistance with my computer ordeal.
My next project is rebuilding my rear bicycle wheel.

I have never re-threaded spokes but I know people who do. I see someone got rid of the multiple posts. I could see you falling asleep on your keyboard. Strange things can happen when you do that.
